The 2D sequel that was more like the DKC games, not the first one. I remember a bunch of people voted for it in Raven's GOTY tournament, but I don't think there's been much discussion of the game here?

I just started playing it after getting it free from Epic months ago, and it seems... fine? It's structurally pretty interesting, in that you can fight the final boss from the very start, but you're encouraged to go around the map and collect power-ups from levels scattered all around. After a certain point, you're given abilities to alter levels in different ways - freeze a water level, add a bunch of rushing enemies to others - which is pretty neat. You also unlock tonics that can make the game easier (and I assume harder once I find those), which is something I always appreciate in games. But the levels themselves are just... fine so far. They haven't stood out in any particular way. Hopefully it gets better as I go on?

Great game that is ruined by the design of the final level.

At first I was opposed to it because they basically said "screw giving our Kickstarter backers the free dlc we promised because we'd rather work on a new game". I ended up getting it on sale and I liked it fine enough. The overworld was fun to explore, and I had more fun with that than the actual levels.

I think it's consistently really strong, but it doesn't have the budget to make its big, setpiece levels really stand out. I had a ton of fun with a bunch of levels, particularly the auto-scrollers and one of the later airship levels, but Hell if I can tell you anything specific about any given level other than the Impossible Lair itself (which is fantastic - way to make a level that preys on player nerves to be hard rather than just abusing cheap enemy placement).

I find it's a game that's more than the sum of its parts, but fails to really stand out aside from the overworld and its main gimmick, which makes it hard to talk about outside of "platforming good, play game".

Yeah! It's a small thing but it's fun to tinker around in there.

I can see that. It's a competent game so far with a pretty good roll jump, which can carry it a little bit.
