The Zero series essentially takes it even darker & edgier than the X series, & it's easily the best chapter of the classic timeline. ZX kinda brings down a bit from there, but that secret ending in Advent suggests things would have gotten edgier if it continued. --- Remember kids, it's only an RPG until someone gets hit with a meteor; Then it's a JRPG! There were little bits about him wishing the fighting might stop, but he was mostly just a straight out Maverick hunter who wanted to be as powerful as Zero. Which makes sense because if the X series different have different themes than the Classic series it would have kind of been pointless. And if you follow the story of the MMX games they're generally kind of sad stories, especially when you get to MMX4 and especially the MMZ series. The Mega Man timeline in general is honestly pretty fucked up with humanity nearly going extinct multiple times. There's probably better definitions, but I see them like this. "Only Hope" X is a force of nature that exceeds everyone else in combat ability, yet holds the moral high ground and is always on the side of right. Although this type of character outstrips the supporting cast and causes events to gravitate solely around him, his moral stance usually means a lack of characterization, or that the other characters seem more interesting than him. Think of say Goku and the Z-Fighters. Goku always wins, so the outcome of any battle becomes boring/is a given; meanwhile it'd be much more interesting if a character with texture, like Tien, Piccolo or Krillin fought and won instead. That being said, when the Only Hope stands alone, when it's just them standing up for justice, standing up against an impossible force or innumerable odds to do the right thing for no gain or glory, is when they're at their finest. Thus, the Only Hope. "Last Hope" Zero, on the other hand, has some similarities to the Only Hope but also some key differences. Obviously they have to be competent where combat is concerned, but they don't have to hold the moral high ground, or even win all the time. Usually this is the edgier character, with some kind of chip on their shoulder, whether it's emotional, physical or mental trauma. However, unlike the Only Hope, the Last Hope is much more interesting in the company of others. They need to break against other people, or they end up looking foolish, wallowing in their own misery, pain or insanity. This can work well in parallel to the Only Hope, of course (X and Zero, Sonic and Shadow, Kiryu and Majima, Goku and Vegeta), but even better is when it's with characters that need help or protection--maybe because the Last Hope is the one that understands struggle. They might not be the first one you'd go to, but once they're in, they're gonna win no matter how much of a beating they get. Thus, the Last Hope. Anyway that's just how I see em.
