Besides the riots of MLK's assassination, has the nation ever reacted to the death of one person like this before?

How is this funny? I seriously think MLK riots were the last time something this widespread happened.

Do you think riots every 50 years is normal or something...? Then again this is America where owning an armory in your garage is normal.

But that was just LA. Not widespread. There are other major riots like Detroit race riots. Again, this was not nationwide though.

... it was nationwide, but the LA riot was so much worse than anywhere else that people weren't paying much attention. Everyone was focused on LA.

Just within the past decade:

Trump's election and inauguration.

Some of the higher profile cases from the middle part of this decade (thinking of Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin in particular) spawned nationwide protests.

These aren't riots. Did Occupy even burn anything down?

How many more cities burned property down? I'm just curious how widespread the rioting really was.

brestugo posted...
This is correct.

Then I'm probably wrong. Every time I read about this riot, never is another city mentioned.

Yeah, it's hard. CNN had just gained a lot of traction in 1991 so it was cutthroat between cable and network news to get the best footage. I suspect the best sources will be local papers, if they're archived back that far. In Detroit a lot of the coverage that still exists is kind of mixed up with the Malice Green riots. I lived near Detroit at the time, there were riots but not anything even as bad as Lansing had a few years later over basketball. Atlanta and Baltimore had riots as well, as I recall.

https://www.ajc.com/news/from-1992-atlanta-rodney-king-riots/cqNImOgyvgWN6NnhOmpn7M/

That's all I can find without spendng 15 minutes typing in every major city in the US and Rodney King's name and going through archives. Either way, I lived through it, it happened-- although not nearly as broadly destructive as what we're seeing.

The 24 hour news cycle was still in its infancy. Today theres social media where people can watch the vid and share it directly. And people can get immediate information and coordinate with one another to form protests.

LA News was heavily covering because it happened there, news stations on the east coast may have covered it but not heavily until the rioting started.
