Instead of "oh, I'll use these all powerful stones that can literally create anything out of nothing, ie resources, to instead do a short sighted solution that is a child's idea of solving overpopulation which the movie was not being subtle about. Never mind that in a few years, the population will increase again"

What even was that? 10 years of waiting and that's the sympathetic villain angle they went with?

In the comics he was doing it to impress Death so she'd go out with him.

well even in the comic it's based on, he didn't want to rule the universe. in the comics, he was in love with the cosmic manifestation of the concept of Death basically. who in that story was depicted as a woman. and he was so obsessed with her he thought if he killed enough people maybe she would pay attention to him. I kinda wish they had stuck with that motivation and we got to see Death even. but she probably would look silly in live action. and I think most MCU viewers would not like that storyline. it worked in the comic but might not have worked in a movie

I would have been fine with that, sounds much better, more comic booky and less "weird poorly thought out real life allegory". Just put a blonde wig on a robed skeleton and it works.

Because its still better than the motivation he had in the comics. Which was essentially to impress a metaphysical chick.

omfg lol that was perfect XD

I remember watching the movie and being like, so why are these 4 horsemen of apocalypse er thanos even going along with his plan if odds are they'll be ultimately killed in the snap. Worth it to weigh the 50-50 option? Did they not know? Probably that. Hard to believe he wouldn't have dissenters in his army if that was his ridiculous plan all along.

What happened to the tough, intimidating guy we saw in guardians of the galaxy that we couldn't wait to see in his first film...

That's why at the end of Avengers 1, Thanos's lackey says "to challenge humans is to court death" and Thanos gives a big smile

Nobody would have bought Thanos' Death-crush as a motivation.

Yes, Thanos' plan was foolish, but it wasn't because he was dumb; it was because he was arrogant. He wanted to be right more than he wanted to actually solve things. He wanted the sun to rise on a grateful universe. Grateful to him.

His need to wipe out half the life is born of his own insanity, it's not meant to be logical.

lmao at "ruling the universe" as his motivation. It's like you purposefully came up with a worse motivation for him.

See, I was hoping they'd do something like, he'd want to rule the universe, with an iron fist, so that he can end all wars and "suffering" and whatnot, by having people bow to him and no longer fight or I dunno. Might seem like a retread of what Loki wanted but it's the only thing that would have made sense for someone with such a huge army conquering worlds. Why else would you conquer worlds if not to rule.

Even in DC's equivalent Darkseid has a better goal, the whole anti-life equation thing (which apparently is basically mind control/becoming a slave to Darkseid's will?) It sounds ridiculous enough without being lame like Thanos's thing, and something that's threatening enough to get a whole bunch of heroes to team up and fight him over.

I think Death can be both. it's the same being but it's sometimes depicted as male and sometimes female.

I thought his motivation was fine. His conversation with Dr Strange made it pretty clear that he only wants to prove to himself that he was right on Titan. He's obviously not meant to be sane, although there are plenty of people who think that he had a point.

The best part is that after he does it, then she's afraid of him because of how much power the stones give him, so she turns him down anyway.

Marvel's version of Death is basically an agnsty teen girl, at first she won't talk to him because he's a regular 'guy' beneath her. Then after he beefs up and becomes the proverbial Football Star, she can't talk to him because he's too good for her.

For a while, Thanos was immortal by the fact that he was banned from dying because Death didn't want to see him anymore.
