Yeah, @Paratroopa1 did a review on this a while back and I was interested it ever got ported off of PC, and it's coming out today for PS4 and Switch.

Will probably pick it up.

It's a very fun game with some cool mechanics and characters, and a pretty decent story. It is very Paper Mario. Great game.

It's worth looking into - it's a very rough-around-the-edges, handcrafted kind of indie game, not the highest production values but it's well-made and has a lot of heart. It's probably not as good as Paper Mario for the most part but it tries its best and it subtly does some new stuff with the Paper Mario mechanics that are worth looking into (much harder game, for one, especially if you equip the hard mode medal). World and characters are very cute. Don't expect too much from it, but it is a worthy bearer of the title of "Paper Mario-like."

Without the hard mode medal I'd say it's as difficult as the original Paper Mario with pretty much the same difficulty curve, maybe a slightly harder final boss, so take that as you will for your kid - it should be good beginner RPG fare, it merely offers options that make it a lot harder than PM if desired. Content should be kid-appropriate, it's a little bit grimmer than Paper Mario but still well on the lighthearted side of things (I mean, PM is one of the least dark games ever created). Should be a kid-friendly pick all things considered.

I seem to be in the minority but something about the art really turns me off with this game. It's like they randomly decided which things to shade and it doesn't blend well to me. I've watched some trailers and they have cell-shaded flowers next to completely normal flowers at one point and it just does not look good.

I think the art's okay - there are some areas that look better than others.

You can reduce or turn down the black outlines which may help.

also a lot of the charm of the first 2 paper mario games was how they build off classic Mario character designs and create new ones. If you don't have that, you need a really stellar style, which I don't think Bug Fables really has, at least from what I've seen
