Honestly, none of the PSP MGS games are worth playing. Peace Walker is only decent on console with a controller.

Is it even canon? At the beginning of PW, kaz basically says Hey im glad we can act like nothing happened in the previous game.

No which is why it was omitted in the MGS Legacy Collection and why Peace Walker is canon.

It's that goofy canon where Kojima doesn't want to acknowledge it even though the ending was the entire set up to MGS4's ending.

it's Canon, but it only gets a brief reference in MGS4/Peace Walker. It's not important at all to the main story. Shame because it does have some interesting characters and moments.

Some parts of it are canon, the general story. However, there are some parts that are not. One notable non canon aspect is Grey Fox showing up in the game.

So i wouldn't worry too much. The story overall is decent though despite the gave being a body dragging simulator.

Seems like it was meant to be canon, but later it was retconned out of existence. But rather than just pretend it never happened, Kojima tried to make it a graceful retcon, so they drop a few lines about it in the vaguest of terms without getting into specifics.

So in that sense, it's canon but it doesn't matter, which pretty much means it's not canon.

In GZ, there's a mission where you' re supposed to look for the logos of all the previous games in the series, but if it's non-canon, or in a different canon (like Acid), it doesn't count and Miller says something like "I don't remember that one." This is the treatment PO receives also.

You're probably thinking of Portable Ops Plus, which was multiplayer only for some reason. They took out the campaign and just added a bunch of stuff to the multiplayer.

Yes. Play order of release to avoid dated gameplay. Cutscenes, voice acting, music makes it extra worth it

I don't think post-MGS3 is the problem. MGS2's story had a good many problems too.

Snake dies, then comes back from the dead.
Otacon claims he had a rowboat nearby to save Snake from drowning, but they were well past the intended exfiltration point and actually out in the middle of the harbor.
Snake equips a cheat item in a cutscene.
Rose is confirmed to be an AI, then approaches Raiden on the street.
S3 goes through how many definitions?
Raiden literally gives up fighting the RAYs.
Fortune is given a device that gives her the superpower she already has.
Nobody is suspicious when said device that makes bullets dodge her also prevents grenades from detonating.
Ocelot, who has the same device, is able to hold and use a handgun.

She actually was only AI near the end when the Patriots used her image to talk to Raiden; the Colonel was always "somewhere else" and the three never met in person together.

Additionally I always interpreted her showing up right there was because of the Patriots freeing her because Raiden did what they asked and killed Solidus. The actual ending has so much imagery that a real thing like that might've been lost in the confusion

Not a lot is actually that clear about Rose, tbh. I simplified that one because it's so complicated. It seems like there's probably a real Rose in the game's universe (MGS4 confirms, though at time of writing there was no concept for MGS4), but it's not clear if we ever speak to her via codec or if it's the AI the whole time. The one Raiden meets on the street seems to have an awareness that Raiden has been having identity issues, but at the same time, Raiden also mentions from very early on that codec Rose isn't acting as he would have expected. "No comment? I've killed someone."

Portable Ops is enjoyable. It is definitely a Beta Version of PW though.
