I stopped playing it for a while because of FF7 and other stuff, but got back into it last week and just finished it

The thing is though I thought I finished it fully 10 hours ago, and then the game just kept ending
and ending
and ending some more
and then ending again

This went way beyond even MGS4's ending, and that was at least semi-earned due to 4 games worth of investment in the characters and world and it had more stuff to wrap up.

It basically burned me out on even the vaguest notion of Platinuming it, and that's despite 3/4 days ago building an extensive and highly satisfying zipline-to-road network that stopped perfectly at every delivery location (except 2) that would make completing the orders I need to complete trivial

Honestly I built a zipline network from some waystation up a mountain to the uh...spiritualist? I think? And it connected with the previous network I had built that connected to mountain knot, the doctor, etc. So I sort of came at my network from the other side and closed the loop, and I audibly said "I fucking love this game", it was such a satisfying moment. Some of the detail in the gameplay was really amazing. Some of the ideas and the asynchronous online were amazing. In some ways it's risky/interesting/different and in some ways it's totally tedious garbage. I do like the way that in most 3D open world games, you become stronger and level up to more effectively beat enemies. There's a bit of that here, but mostly you're levelling up your ability to traverse, build stuff, help people, connect, whatever. That's good.

Also, holy shit, princess beach. jesus christ.

I will say this though - I'm playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider next which I'm sure will be like, aggressively fine, but I can basically guarantee I'll put a lot less thought into it than I've put into DS, a game I have no idea what to feel about.

I think this is how people felt when they played MGS2 though? I loved all the shit MGS2 pulled in the final few hours, all the long cutscenes. I totally bought into all of that shit and still do. But a lot of complaints I saw, here included, said it was a good story with bad storytelling, which I just never felt, but maybe DS is guilty of that with its ending. Because I liked some of the stuff in the ending, it's not like I hated the plot or anything, it was just fucking dumped on you repeatedly, unceasingly, interminably. I posted this on the discord but I'm gonna say it here too: I know they're totally different games, but I did find myself thinking about Horizon Zero Dawn when playing it. How they're both post-apocalyptic and the stories both end up laying out the secrets of how the apocalypse happened while creating hope for the future - and how HZD just executes that idea so much better. Maybe an unfair comparison, but still

Whatever, sorry, rambling thoughts. I'm frustrated in a way because I don't feel able to simply dismiss it as a bad game, because it isn't(?), but I also can't call it one of my favourites either.

Oh also I feel like I should be better rewarded for completing the road.
Like my reward for completing a road from south knot to lake knot should not be "oh cool now I can drive a truck down this road for 10 minutes with no obstacles or challenge or excitement, woo"

I was actually thinking that if you have a road built, you should be able to auto-complete any standing order that stops along that road, if you choose to (so basically the cities/distro centers). Or like send auto-trucks. There's a mission that requires a truck that takes you from south knot to lake knot, I think, and I had the road fully built, and it's like a 10 minute drive. As reward for completing the road, maybe an auto-truck can simply complete that delivery for me? I know it's a little bit against the point of the game, but the game has more standard orders than you can shake a stick at and this wouldn't affect all of them

Yeah I agree. It's a complicated game. I like it a lot, but there's a lot to criticize and it's both brilliant and so, so stupid in ways that are both bad and good. Sometimes simultaneously. Like, I'm very glad "Princess Beach" exists as a real line of dialogue. But holy shit.

I think this is a common reaction, though. I remember the topic being full of takes like this. And Kotaku published two absolutely glowing reviews (one by Tim Rogers!) and then both reviewers turned around and did an hour-long podcast that was just both of them dumping on every single thing they hated about the game.

Yeah I did some reading and what I said is a fairly normal take it turns out

You'd think that the combination of "good" and "bad" would mean the game is "average" but that just does not seem like the right word.

OK so I read a take on this that basically says this comment, and the whole ridiculous running scene that followed it, was some sort of meta-commentary on games - which is also why the Higgs fight plays as such a classically video-gamey final boss - but I think this may be the point where I stop drinking the Kojima Kool-Aid and just write it off as terrible (terribly hilarious) dialogue.

The monologue on the beach at the end (not the Princess Beach stuff, the one that leads into credits) is probably the worst experience I have ever had with media, and makes the character giving it my #1 most hated character in fiction.

It's so fucking awful. That half hour stretch was a nightmare, and did irreparable damage to my overall opinion of the game.

anyone who has finished the game and is talking about princess beach and not samantha america strand's name meaning SOUL LIE is doing this game a disservice.

SOUL. LIE.

anyway i think i love the game because it's earnest and raw but it is also incredibly self-indulgent and lacks... any? good characters? it's a game where the moment-to-moment stuff is fascinating, and the scene direction is engaging, but the wider picture stuff fails to build to a satisfying conclusion. it crafts a compelling narrative in the broad sense, but it often buckles under its own weight.

so this is weird because what you are describing doesn't exist. kotaku did a podcast about death stranding but neither heather nor tim were on it. heather and tim did talk about the game on video but it was before they had ever finished the game. heather also talked about her feelings about the game after she finished it, but for waypoint and not kotaku. i guess it's pretty easy to get confused considering how many people covered it in a short time span, now that i think about it

coincidentally I just came back to the finish the game after leaving it alone for like three months because I got frustrated with Vietnam and was too stubborn to drop the difficulty from hard

I was sure I must have beaten it but I just saw the title card
Chapter 14

Lou

so I guess Im still doing this.

I legitimately said fuck you kojima to my monitor when she explained Soul Lie
why the fuck was her name Samantha America Strand in the first place if she was just always going to be called Amelie? What a weird, pointless detail.

(I love this game but I am a little mad at it right now)

also its very funny to me to imagine the moment right before the presidential speech cutscene starts where this guy in a mask must have went on tv and said my fellow Americans, im your new President Die-hardman or something

that whole stretch where the game starts to end is the most i've been so thoroughly over a game being completely smitten with itself.

icon is right that there isn't a single good character in all of death stranding, save maybe for heartman, but he was more amusing in his presentation and fascinating as an idea for a character than he is actually anyone with a story you can be invested in.

the ending just double downed on trying to make you care for these characters, as if the big scenes were supposed to be these satisfying pay-offs. but i didn't give two shits about any of them, and they all just kept talking and speechifying with their terriblly written dialogue spouting the most inane nonsense that the game thinks is ~so profound~ for hours and hours.

just so much of it sucks

which is a goddamn shame because yo actually playing that game is great! haven't played anything like it, and the design is just executed so well.

i don't hate them. i think some of them are charismatic, as the performers all did a great job. but they're all a mess of incoherent or obscured motivations and kojimaisms, and they don't have the decades of good will built up like the cast of metal gear solid.

based on mgs4, mgsv, and death stranding all being narrative trainwrecks, i don't really have much else to say about kojima's writing chops. he can still direct a cutscene like no other, but he's basically been all style no substance since mgs4. he's got some interesting ideas, but he's proven to be completely inept at presenting them in a way that's engaging apart from "here's a cool cutscene", and that's dependent on whether or not there's a bunch of talking, because he's also shown he has no ear for dialogue. nobody talks like a human being in death stranding!!! and it expects you to empathize with these characters spouting gibberish. the actors did a commendable job, but good performances here couldn't carry a leaden script.

i really don't use this word often because i think it's overused especially in internet forums, but death stranding is actually pretentious. its unearned confidence in believing the story it dedicates hours and hours to fumbling through has something profound to say is downright enviable. whatever insight you could gain from it can only be taken from the moment-to-moment gameplay, not from the thousands and thousands of words written for its plot, characters, and world-building.

which goes back to the main point that he is indeed a brilliant game designer and a hack writer.

you aren't wrong with your first impression. the way the game wraps up is bad.

I was curious so I just looked up MGS4

Four separate scenes in the game's finale add up to 71 minutes of non-play, and are longer than some theatrical films. The game also holds the record for longest single cutscene at 27 minutes.

technically ive had control of Sam for some bits after I fought Sin, but that barely counts as play. I havent kept track but it definitely feels like this games been ending for at least an hour
