(sorry, take out the space, link was too long) On Thursday, China made clear it was asserting control over Hong Kong through improvement of its governance. The legislation could pass as early as next week and will bypass all of Hong Kongs usual processes. The shift will have far-reaching effects. Under the agreement Britain signed with China before it handed back Hong Kong in 1997, the territory is supposed to enjoy its relative freedoms until at least 2047 under the one country, two systems framework. Im speechless, Dennis Kwok, a pro-democracy lawmaker, said of the proposed national security legislation. Kwok was singled out for criticism by Beijing and was recently removed from his chairmanship of a key Legislative Council committee. This is a complete and total surprise and I think it means the end of one country, two systems. China causes the coronavirus pandemic, then instead of having, say...shame.... recognizes it as a golden opportunity to swoop in and crush dissent in Hong Kong, with the world distracted and HK citizens unable to protest en masse without risking their own health. I'm sadly not shocked, I was actually expecting China would go a step further and intentionally contaminate HK protestors to scare them into ceasing protests. Hell, they're probably still planning that if this measure doesn't dispirit the people of HK enough to keep them from resisting. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Country asserts control over part of its nation. More at 11.
Not sure why people expect governments to stop governing in the midst of a pandemic. And if protests were all it took, then HK would have seceded. streamofthesky posted... More at 11.China agreed to the "one country, two systems setup as part of the 1997 hand over, and they're blatantly disregarding that, as well as the will of the residents of HK, who have REPEATEDLY made it clear they don't want their freedoms taken away. that kinda sounds like the philosophy of Cao Cao from Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Dynasty WarriorsIt's a pretty common sentiment. There's plenty of times where it's not nefarious and makes sense. Safety guidelines for ships came as a result of the Titanic, for example. Sadly sometimes it takes a tragedy for people to be open to changes that are good that may have been previously resisted, often because they cost money. ... Copied to Clipboard!
