What? You mean keeping jedis and siths to the bear minimum and having a decent narrative plot? Yeah, then you are right.

Soooo.... does that order still stand up to Mandalorian? Because there stormtroopers can't hit shit. Even some discount Oceans 7 crew member made fun of them when talking to Mando in that one episode where they were trying to spring free a captive from inter-galactic jail.

I actually thought the stormtroopers were more incompetent in Rogue One than any other Star Wars film.

The main characters could shoot into the sky and five stormtroopers would fall like rain.

I have my own (or maybe there's some similar theory in the internet, IDGAF) theory: the storm-troopers are so bad at aiming, cause they can't see shit through their helmets.

It used to be confirmed canon in the EU.

It IS canon even in the films that they literally allowed them to escape the Death Star so that they could follow them back to the Rebel base (which they immediately and successfully do), so shooting them would have been somewhat counter-productive.

Leia literally points out "the ease of their escape". Han scoffs at the idea, but the films kind of establish that Leia is usually right and Han is kind of an idiot, sooo...

Plus Grand Moff Tarkin literally tells Vader that "I'm taking an awful risk" and mentions the homing beacon they put on their ship. It doesn't make all that much sense to bother tagging someone's ship so you can follow them if you have no intention of ever letting them escape.

In the grand scheme of things they were definitely allowed to escape.

To imply that individual stormtroopers were letting themselves get killed in order to sell the illusion is a bit of a reach. It also doesn't explain similar behaviour in the other two films.

The stormtroopers are simply meant to be incompetent mooks, in keeping with typical action movie trends, even if it seems inconsistent with the universe as a whole. They were making films first, not space nazi propaganda.

not to mention that those movies also tell us that stormtroopers are extremely accurate

It's actually true though, at least in New Hope... they were allowed to escape to find the rebel base

Jokes aside though, they actually do seem to be fairly competent against non-heroes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2TA9coGLzM

Mind you, some trooper squads are probably better then others. And having someone like Vader nearby may grant them some sort of force buff or something.

As noted before, the accuracy in New Hope was purposeful to some extent, likely with orders to "try and let at least enough some of them go" and probably also a dose of "let them get the princess away." Of course, we can just speculate on this as, well, yeah. Someone already mentioned the grand moff quote.
