Physical or digital video games?

Which do you prefer? I personally prefer owning the physical copy. I like seeing my collection increase and I can always lend it/sell it if I no longer have interest. I downloaded FFVII/FFVIII on my Switch, but just ordered the physical copy. I do understand the convenience of having digital though.

Digital.

As a kid I owned a lot of physical games, and while I agree with your points towards physical, it doesn't do a lot of good if they stop working. Which most of mine have since I didn't take good care of my discs as a kid.

The only problem I have with digital is the memory it takes up. I have a constant problem on my Switch of only having about 6-7 games installed and having to delete one whenever I want to play a new/different game. And this is considering I've got a 64 GB SD card in addition to the 32 GB system storage.

Ah man, I dont exactly have many games that I owned as a kid, but I remember all the scratches on the back of the disc that my PS2/Dreamcast wouldnt read, lol. I take care of everything now, definitely learned my lesson.

Physical. Because I trade my games after I beat them. Which is why my collection is always so small. I don't like keeping a game after I beat it once or twice. If I was to buy digital I'd be stuck with a game forever and never could trade them for other ones

For consoles, physical because there's at least some guarantee I can play the game in ten years if I want. You'll at least be able to load patches through other means even if the servers go down. Though for games I plan on playing daily for a long time, I do go digital initially, though I'll eventually buy a used physical copy way down the line. If they ever develop some kind of laws where access to purchased digital content must be guaranteed, then I'd be fine with buying digital more often.

I mean it already happened for the Wii online shop right? Either way with modern gaming you typically need substantial updates to play the proper experience so it's kinda the same.

Have you not seen that the Wii shop shut down? It's only a matter of time before others do the same. Hopefully these companies will start moving your purchases up each generation, but a ton of stuff will be lost in the coming years unless Sony and Microsoft vow to never shut down the 360 and PS3 servers.

Well you can't download the games you paid for if you didn't transfer it to your Wii U.

Especially relevant today with large game files.

Yes but that's in your control. I can't control when/if the download servers shut down.

That's not really a relevant argument. The point is a massive flaw for digital is the lack of upkeep after a certain amount of time, and the end of service is close rather than some far off 30-80 years away like the breakdown of current physical items.

Let's take PS3 for an example. I currently own about 60 PS3 games, and nearly every single one of them is now available in one way or another elsewhere, whether it's a PS4 remaster, PS Now, etc.

If my PS3 collection burned in a fire OR they shut down the PSN, that small handful of likely irrelevant games that hasn't been made available anywhere else can then be re-bought physically for $5 bucks at a used game store.

Compared to the convenience of just having everything digital and assuming everything will be fine, i'll take digital.

Sure i'm buying them again, but i'm likely buying remastered and improved versions anyway so it's a worthy purchase.

Plus my PC has been essentially digital since day 1 and we just assume everything will be fine with Steam games.

We've never actually owned MMORPGs but we play them and pay $14.99 a month and just assume they'll be around forever.

It's the same leap of faith.
