I tried this completely blind knowing nothing about it. I knew there was going to be something fucked up going on, but I honestly was not expecting the place to be a human flesh farm for monsters. This is Advanced Level Japan.

I was honestly not interested in it at all for the first like 18 minutes. Even the little girl's dead body was sort of a meh because I saw it coming.

But then they looked out from under the truck and it was some motherfucker with a rectangle face and vertical eyes and I'm in now.

I finished it all in a day <_<

It was pretty good. It was a little too anime in places and spun its wheels a bit, but I liked it.

Where does the anime end? Minor manga non-plot spoilers: There's a couple places it slows down in the middle, but the series is very good and consistent throughout.

It ended with the over-four kids escaping, the under-four kids staying with only Phil(?) knowing about the situation, and the reveal that Isabella is Nate's mother when she decides to hide where they escaped.

I called that last one btw. I didn't expect Nate to know about it, but of course he does with him remembering being a fetus. Which was the most hilarious aspect of the show.

Edit: Oops, I did say just the first episode in the title.

That's around chapter 40 out of the current 178. With how much plot each chapter encompasses, I guess that's a lot. Looks like season 2 starts around January 2021 in Japan.
It's hard to say more, even with spoiler tags. If you're up for it, the manga is some great, unique, almost Western art. The artist really knows their stuff, it reads almost like a storybook or storyboard than a manga. It steers away from most typical manga tropes and really compacts the information it conveys visually and through dialogue.

Really? I totally disagree. It's more like a 90's cartoon movie, like Little Nemo or Fifel Goes West. There are dark moments, but it's never grimdark and only shonen-y in the way that any adventure story is, probably less-so than Harry Potter.

How far are you? Theres genocide of innocent people advocated by a hero and kids getting brutalized to death onscreen by a psycho with half his face melted off after surviving an explosion. It also shows that Isabelles house was one of the most luxurious houses and other houses had kids literally treated like farm animals tubed up and mutilated

I'm on the current chapter. Don't read these spoilers if you haven't read the manga: the tone is almost never grim, always hopeful. There's some graphic violence, slightly gratuitous, but nothing close to Berserk or Gantz. The images are really pretty tame and even if the plot is dark the story is hopeful. Maybe this is personal taste. Maybe I'm desensitized or maybe you're squeamish, but I don't think Promised Neverland is grimdark.

Boy are you for some disappointment. I have been forcing myself to pick up the volumes of the manga as they release here (I think the next tankoubon is the last one, but maybe not?), but I really just want it to end soon. I would say it gets Shoneny fast, but grim dark? Nah.

It already is pretty shoneny.

I think my biggest complaint are the fakeouts. For example, Ray burning himself and then it jumps away. That twist lasted like three minutes, I don't see why they had to do a twist. My guess is that these were places where a manga chapter ended which makes the twist make more sense since there'd be a month in between instead of three minutes.

I mean, obviously not on the levels of the explicitly edgy as possible levels of Berserk and Gantz but it gets to onscreen child mutilation and genocide and terrorist bombings performed by the heroes levels of dark. And the anime itself was already considered one of the darker animes of the past few years. The tone is hopeful but that's part and parcel of being Shonen. Although that's also something stuff like Resident Evil does and I'd say Neverland is more grimdark in presentation than RE (if only because RE is so camp about it).

i'm glad more shonen is becoming non-battle
i know the bar is pretty low for the writing of shonen
but Promised Neverland is a very well written series

hopefully stuff like that and Beastars will become more of the norm rather than "fight enemy, get stronger, fight stronger enemy" which plagues shonen
i mean yeah it has tropes

but it's a big step up

i've read the first dozen or so volumes

waiting until it finishes and then i'll re-read and then buy the rest
