The coronavirus may still be spreading at epidemic rates in 24 states, particularly in the South and Midwest, according to new research that highlights the risk of a second wave of infections in places that reopen too quickly or without sufficient precautions.

Researchers at Imperial College London created a model that incorporates cellphone data showing that people sharply reduced their movements after stay-at-home orders were broadly imposed in March. With restrictions now easing and mobility increasing with the approach of Memorial Day and the unofficial start of summer, the researchers developed an estimate of viral spread as of May 17.

It is a snapshot of a transitional moment in the pandemic and captures the patchwork nature across the country of covid-19, the disease caused by the virus. Some states have had little viral spread or crushed the curve to a great degree and have some wiggle room to reopen their economies without generating a new epidemic-level surge in cases. Others are nowhere near containing the virus.

The model shows that in the majority of states, a second wave looms if people abandon efforts to mitigate the viral spread.

Theres evidence that the U.S. is not under control, as an entire country, said Samir Bhatt, a senior lecturer in geostatistics at Imperial College.

The Imperial College researchers estimated the viruss reproduction number, known as R0, or R naught. This is the average number of infections generated by each infected person in a vulnerable population. The researchers found the reproduction number has dropped below 1 in the District and 26 states. In those places, as of May 17, the epidemic was waning.

In 24 states, however, the model shows a reproduction number over 1. Texas tops the list, followed by Arizona, Illinois, Colorado, Ohio, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, Alabama and Wisconsin.

Barely relevant image??? The south has an obesity problem. Obese folks are much more likely to suffer and die when it comes to the virus.

Not all of those are Southern states though.

I'm happy to be an upstate New Yorker. I get all the precautions that go along with New York City with none of the population density. Not that we've gotten off easy, I know SiO4 knows people who have died from it, but I feel more confident with our opening than I would is some other states.

It just sucks, there is no easy answer. I just hope we can limit the deaths, that's all I can do. You hear about Alabama having only like 2 ICU beds left, and I'm here scratching my head as to why they are opening up. Georgia took the risk and so far it looks like it's working, but others aren't getting as lucky. Pay attention to the data and go from there.

No one is really celebrating or cheering on deaths, though for me personally ian I told you so type in these situations isn't much better. I rather be wrong and republicans looks like geniuses with their opening up plans than see some of these numbers popping up.

Georgia might have taken a risk, but we're not taking any chances. Like everyone else, I myself was hopeful but also a little nervous at Kemp's decision to open so many places so early on. But as I thought more about it, I realized two things. One, there will never be a "good" time to reopen. We're stuck with this virus for pretty much the entire foreseeable future. We don't know when a vaccine will be available or even if immunity by exposure is guaranteed. So there's no point sheltering ourselves completely, waiting for a day that may never even come. I guarantee you not one state or country in the world is going to do that.

Two, that fear and uncertainty might work to our advantage. Look at all the local businesses, they're not taking any chances. They know they want to stay open but they also don't want to get sick or get others sick. That's why restaurants are so strict about social distancing rules that they leave tables empty. Barbers and stylists wear masks, gloves, and face shields, Stores and shops only let in a certain number of people at a time. Companies use remote working wherever possible. Almost everyone I see wears a mask out in public. Would all of these people be taking so many precautions if they thought they were safe and out of the woods? Or if someone told them the worst was over? Not that anyone is saying that, but it's easy to get lulled into a false sense of security.

And it looks like I was right. Hospitals are still able to treat people. There was actually toilet paper on the shelves for the first time in a month the last two times I went to the store. The number of daily deaths is trending downward. Life isn't perfect, but it's livable, which is all we can really ask for right now. This is a war, so it's best we all figure out how to start fighting, because we might have to keep these habits up for quite a while.

It's not the businesses I take issue with, it's the customers. We keep seeing crowds of people, not just individuals, but whole fucking crowds deciding they want to pretend the virus isn't real.

Well like I said, most of the people I see at Kroger (which is pretty much the only place I go besides work) are wearing face masks. It makes a big difference.

Way more than at Walmart. Walmart is a maskless minefield. Like 25% didn't have them

Ohio.

I am not in the least bit surprised. The people I deal with at my station a borderline special needs at times. Couldn't even tell you how many alcoholic college dropouts have told me they believe the entire virus is a hoax, that doesn't actually exist, and that all the deaths are from other things that are just being blamed on a fake virus.

The sad part is that I can't even say "I hope they get it and find out it's real" because if they actually do get it, they're so damn stupid that they're probably going to give it to me and multiple others before they find out. -_-

NC has started opening back up, but I will not be returning to the workforce for at least another two months, even if I'm not collecting unemployment. The amount of morons I used to respect parading their grinning "social gathering at a bar because the virus is over" faces on social media has put me off from ever wanting to work behind a bar again. You feel like you're part of a family there, but they really showed their true colors shortchanging the workers who drove their success to save their business. My brother actually quit at his own job today because they significantly ramped up his pandemic hours and cut his pay to $10/hr. This is after he basically held that place together on his own for two years, working long hours and filling in for absent and shitty coworkers.

Fuck that industry and fuck people.

Colorado is a southern state confirmed.

Hawaii is the only state that, thanks to it's geographical position, can escape this situation relatively well.
The only thing against it are all you mainlanders ******* it up by flying here and flaunting breaking quarantine, especially by Californians, Floridians, and Coloradians.
