Frustrating part about a new game is fighting dragons for the first time. I hate the instagib attacks.

i am going to play skyrim for the first time on the basis of loving jeremy soule's music for it. i have listened to atmospheres probably 20 times and this clip for many hours too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7BCa9Y8Of8 i also have not played an open world game before so i figure it's a good introduction

my inclination is to choose an imperial character because of my affinity for antiquity ... is this inadvisable?

LotD adds a museum for you to store all the unique items you get throughout Skyrim, its DLCs, and dozens of mods. And a long questline of its own

Not only that but it adds tons (and I mean TONS) of artifacts, items, and lore from older games as well (mostly Oblivion and Morrowind) and a bunch of quests as well. As far as content mods go, it pretty much is the absolute top of the top.

the Imperials understand that now is not the time to confront the Thalmor and that they need to bide their time. whereas the Stormcloaks are playing right into the Thalmor's hands by needlessly dividing and destabilizing the province.

The Imperials are just pussy bitches who won't even stand up for the rights of their citizens. They don't deserve to rule anything.

Look up the racial stats and choose race based on what kind of character you want to play. You can choose to support either the Stormcloaks or the Legion no matter what race you play. I usually play Argonian. You can also play any class with any race.

Uh, no they aren't. The whole civil war benefits the Thalmor but they don't literally support the rebellion. They don't give them funds or weapons or anything like that.

I've logged probably 400 hours in Skyrim (over various versions) but never completed the main story. I hate both sides of the civil war and refuse to pick a side. Stormcloaks are racist assholes and Imperials are Thalmor puppets.

If you join the Racistcloaks, though, you can get a free house. Don't you just get armor or something for helping the Imperials? Been awhile since I did those quests ('cause the civil war plot sucks). The only good Thalmor is a dead Thalmor.

Meh. I just go through the main questline until the game forces a truce to deal with the dragons. That's a more favourable outcome to me than either of the civil war outcomes.

Nah it's been around for years. I think it's feature complete now and future updates for it will just be bugfixes, so they can work on the sequel mod instead.

Unless you're thinking of a mod, owning the Hjerim house in Windhelm is gated behind advancing to a certain point in the Civil War questline; if siding with the Stormcloaks, you can buy it about midway through the campaign, and if siding with the Empire, you have to wait until the questline is over. Either way you're forking over 12,000 gold + furniture upgrades. You don't get any unique item rewards from the questline on either side, apart from looting the enemy leader's clothes (and it's always funny when this happens: aligning with a faction only to be gifted with the other guy's outfit).

One of the first mods I downloaded was one that let you buy Hjerim at any time after completing Blood on the Ice.

Hmm, yeah, maybe it's just allowing Hjerim to be purchased, not given away free. Considering how far it is from the default fast travel spot, I never use it. You don't want a bunch of extra loading screens/transitions when you just want to dump your swag.

Hjerim is garbage, anyways. If I wanted a cold slab of rock to shove up my ass, I'd go to Markarth.

Certainly. I was very of Secret of Evermore as a youngster, and the unusual ambient soundtrack, together with the sometimes bombastic CD score, played a major role in that. Actually, I seem to recall your username from the SoE GameFAQs board around 2000. Am I mistaken?

I loved Secret of Evermore's soundtrack. The mixing of ambient sounds to the area music gave it a very lived in, desiccated feeling. It's one of the game's strong points.
