Like, seriously, what makes it sooo bad?

It had a really cool and unique concept, it wasn't ruined by dumb rallies, it had funny entrants (Hitler, Great Mighty Poo...).

What. Is. So. Bad. About. It???

Most of the characters were really weak and unmemorable, and most of the match outcomes (including the inevitable winner) were highly predictable.

This reasoning has always baffled me. Predictability makes a contest unfun? And it wasn't really as predictable as people made it to be in the first place. If you're referring to the actual winners of every match, then it was mildly predictable at worst, but I found it as unpredictable as any other contest.

As for the performances of each entrant, I found it shocking that Blazkowicz/Hitler didn't get quadrupled, Sora/Riku vs. Squall/Seifer not being one-sided in the least, Pokmon Trainers beasting beyond expectations, and of course, Scorpion/Sub-Zero obliterating Leon/Ada. Even the most debated match, Cloud/Seph vs. Link/Ganon, kept being debated until the very end.

And no, just because the Trainers vs. Cloud/Sephiroth had a 10-vote gap at the end doesn't automatically make it the "best match of the contest".

The Crew got one match wrong all contest.

If a contest is going to be predictable, at least make up for it with exciting matches. I'm not all that interested in raw data from things we're never going to see again because it isn't useful for anything else.

Define "exciting".

Rallyable characters?
Unexpectedly close matches?
Unexpected blowouts?
Upsets?

I remember all of those.

Because for the most part, the rivalries just functioned as proxies for the heroes with a couple of exceptions, so it just thinned the field dramatically. Instead of having Bowser or Ganondorf or Magus or Zero as seperate entries from their heroes, they are effectively removed from the bracket by being chained to their rivals. This is then compounded by a lot of our upper midcarders being side characters that don't have rivalries, think your Yoshi, Tifa, Aeris, Vivi, Auron, Vincent, Zelda, etc, alongside characters that had multiple options for rivalries, so we got characters like Knuckles and Wario being snubbed to boot.

All the format really did was remove most of the debatable characters that usually end up being in the most interesting matches.

I only got one match wrong and finished in 4th place.

Also Ulti's right; the only good match was the one that didn't count. The closest match in the first two rounds was 55-45. Potential pairings like Mario vs Sonic deemed ineligible. Lots of forgettable fodder that we'd never see again.

Legit the worst contest for six years until the Best Year contest claimed the title.

Yeah, there were very few truly interesting pairings. It was mostly protagonist/antagonist and some things that weren't really rivalries at all (Ramza/Delita is not a rivalry, darn it).

Mario/Sonic could've at least made the contest memorable.

A huge problem was that it had annoying restrictions preventing the same characters from being represented multiple times. Most of the time we had Hero vs. Main Villain, so for example we couldn't also get Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Mario vs. Wario, Mario vs. Sonic, Mario vs. Luigi, Sonic vs. Shadow, Sonic vs. Knuckles, Snake vs. Big Boss etc. This could have made things harder to predict how much comes from the quality of the rivalry versus just the quality of the characters? Instead it was just "Character Battle but more boring".

Exactly why we don't need a series contest or why it should be very low priority.
