Leading into this we were giving our thoughts on the Last of Us 2 leaks and I said I refused to read them because disgruntled leakers always put things in the worst light, plus I WANT a story to contain controversial plot points that get the internet upset!

With Star Wars, it was a constant presence in my life ever since Episode I came out, but it took me until 2018 to fully appreciate the original trilogy - and even then mostly in the context of when they came out, since I had gotten comfortable enough watching movies from the '70s and '80s. Watching the movies again that summer helped shed light on the problems I have with the later Star Wars films.

I haven't seen The Force Awakens since it came out, but I vaguely remember liking it and think I still would if I watched again, albeit with plenty of reservations. I saw The Last Jedi at home with my family in 2018 after watching the original trilogy and while I didn't like it a whole lot, I still didn't find it anywhere near as bad as many say, although I definitely understand where the hate comes from (and no it's not entirely because people are racist or sexist, though there is a fair amount of that). To me though, the movie still did what it needed to do and it just could have done it better. Rise of Skywalker is I swear the most generic Hollywood blockbuster ever made.

What truly astonishes me about the fan culture surrounding these films is how viciously people hate them. I've never seen anything like this, not even with stuff like Metroid: Other M, and all this for three movies which were overall well-received and have their fair share of fans anyway. But no, these so-called Star Wars fans act like the whole trilogy is a waste and that nothing good came out of it, which is insane. I can rationalize this seething hatred for the films, but mostly due to outside circumstances that have little to do with the movies themselves and more with the people watching them and industry trends. So yeah, these Star Wars "fans" come across to me as entitled whiny cry-babies who didn't get what they want, some of them even stooping to such a low as to accuse the movies of being bad because they have more women and people of color in them (the horror!) and then complain when they get lumped in with Trump supporters. Did I mention how much I hate the politicization of film discussion these days, all because there are more women and POC in movies nowadays? Newsflash: white men are not the default state of humanity guys! Stop saying stuff that can get you painted as racist or sexist. It shouldn't be that hard.

I could go on, but I'll stop here for now.

I should mention that YouTuber Thor Skywalker polled his viewers on whether their opinion on the prequels has improved, and more than 60% of them said they never disliked them in the first place. Given the new Star Wars films were made largely to win back those turned off from the franchise by the prequels, it's not surprising that this approach could backfire among this subsection of the Star Wars fanbase.

The problem then is that these fans act like the franchise is entitled to them and only them, which is unbelievably ridiculous and destroys any sympathy I have.. This franchise has been a mainstream phenomenon since its inception, as opposed to something like Star Trek which built up a cult following over time, so this idea of Star Wars being for a relatively small group of people makes no sense to me. The most they can claim is keeping the franchise alive through the popularity of the expanded universe, but even then that doesn't excuse this horrible conduct.

It's like nowadays, if something isn't a masterpiece it's completely terrible, and every single aspect of it must come under heavy criticism. What the heck? I also think the notion that critics praised The Last Jedi just because it aligned with their political views, while not without a tiny amount of basis, is a load of hogwash, and I didn't even like the movie! Though I don't like most newer movies, to be fair.

The whole thing about The Last Jedi to me is that a subset of Star Wars fans act like it's some massive atrocity and then list reasons that don't sound anywhere near that bad to me.

The movie industry will always represent a huge question mark on a personal level, Star Wars included. Here's my wacky ranking:

4 > 9 > 5 > 8 > 2 >> 3 >> 7 >> 1 >> RO >>> 6 >> CW

I've loved the whole Star Wars franchise across all generations. The entire franchise has been memorable to me, with at least one low point in each of them, but I just don't get the super-ultra massive love for the original trilogy and the super-ultra massive hate for everything that came afterwards.

• Like, I really liked 4 and 5, but 6 was an atrocious ending imo (Jabba, the Rancor, and the Ewoks are all I can't say anything even remotely good about them, so I'll keep my mouth shut).
• Then I watched the prequels, hated Jar Jar as everyone else, then was mind-blown with 2, and sort of liked 3 as much as everyone else, I guess.
• Finally, the new trilogy thrilled me from the start. Rey may just be my favorite Star Wars character of all time. Episode 7 was nice but lacked some depth, Episode 8 is the only moment in the whole franchise where I could grasp the concept of the franchise for what it is: A fight between good and evil on an intergalactic level; it was the only Episode where I could feel that struggle not focused (only) on certain individuals, but the repercussions reflected on a massive scale as well. Episode 9... is weird; it experiments with many things previously unseen (and succeeds on doing so, imo), hits every note right for me, delivers the ending that Episode 6 failed to deliver (even if it needed to recycle the same premise) but that's it. I liked it a lot, but I'm not sure exactly how much, since it lacked some heart, despite doing some extremely impressive things. Even then, was it really necessary to insert their nasty LGBT propaganda at the end?
• As for the spin-offs, Rogue One was okay and Clone Wars was an absolute "meh" for me.

When I think about Star Wars fans, I can't help but think about the Smash fanbase, where the "true" Smash fans will always regard Melee as the greatest game there will ever be, the only difference here being that I'd dare to say the whole Star Wars fanbase are Melee purists, favoring the original trilogy above everything else and saying that they ruined everything that came afterwards.

As I said, a huge question mark for me...

When I watched Return of the Jedi to cap the original trilogy two years ago, I thought it was pretty much the perfect conclusion. I definitely get the issues people have with the movie, and it's still probably the weakest of the three, but as a feature-length 3rd act it is pretty amazing IMHO.

It's not even so much original trilogy purists as it is, to at least some extent, George Lucas purists.

Also I feel like people really overstate how badly the Star Wars IP has been managed. It's nothing compared to the DCEU (literally putting a Zack Snyder's Justice League mini-series on HBO Max, that's how desperate they are) or Sony Pictures in general.

At worst, Star Wars went from being the biggest movie franchise to being just another big movie franchise. Actually maybe that is really bad considering.

Eh, I'm happy with how things turned out.

Gotta admit my fanboyism is purely Shulk and Monado-based, but being a 6%-sitewide believer (and 10% in Guru) of a game that had every reason to choke it up feels good. P4G almost barely ruined that glorious run.

I mean, it was already rallying to keep its lead against Red Dead Redemption, so maybe it just doesn't need that anymore. Only so much a PC port can do here, maybe if P4G had not already been a perfect Persona 4 proxy, the exposure on our least cared about platform would do that much.

Also, I think we're largely overestimating how much those ports would do here. I can't see Witcher 3 allowing P5 to drop that match if it got closer. Not at all.

And like, Witcher 3 is also on Switch, if that is as good a point as indicated (which I doubt), why do we think enough people would flip to Persona 5? The idea that there sits a crowd on Switch big enough that is ready to buy and love Persona, but didn't already is very doubtful to me, most of them probably has it on PS4 or already voted for it, if they care that much.

We live the Switch and the highly acclaimed first party titles are strong here partly because of it, though they definitely also helped it become that strong. Indie games previously being on stream only but then getting exposure on another console helps a decent bit, because they're not as that likely to have heard about them. But I really doubt it makes that big a difference to a game like Persona 5.

One thing is pulling the upset in a hypothetical rematch, but stating there's no way it drops to Witcher 3 is just... what.

How much do you the Switch release helped Skyrim? Or Shovel Knight? Just to pick two vastly different games. The answer is very little with either one.

I've seen a ton of people who only have a Switch asking for P5. Its requested all the time, especially after Joker got in Smash. I don't think Witcher 3 drops the match regardless but a Switch port would close the gap.
