His shtick was that he was a technological guy, but the Felicity character already filled that niche. He was a vigilante, but they sort of forgot that he was an Olympic-medal winning athlete in his backstory, so he didn't do much good as a vigilante either. What he did do is fill the LGBT quota. Extensive attention was given to his relationships with minor characters, solely to remind people that he liked dudes. The attention given to his love life was easily fourth among all of the relationships in the show.
