0.6% isnt awful, but my county is like 1.6% and a neighboring county is nearly 2.5%.

Still learning how they vary, but Im shocked by my initial impressions.

Every once in a while I think I could afford a $1,000,000 home (probably move to an area where that would be maximized), but property tax seems like it would basically kill the desire for me. Even a $300,000 home seems like an awful deal with property taxes.

I think I might just keep with my apartment living forever or until I move somewhere with lower costs.

I wish there was like a place near the city with mini homes that cost under 100k. Like 1-2 bedroom houses that are under 1000 square feet...but have nice parks and not feel like a dangerous neighborhood. Even something like a trailer park for millennials who want to live ultra low cost by the city.

Thats one of the main reasons I cant see myself ever really buying one. You shouldnt have to pay additional rent on top of ownership. Houses are expensive enough as is.

Between the property tax and upkeep Im basically paying the cost of rent yearly.

Property tax for your apartment complex is included in your rent anyway. Where I live is a good deal, as a senior citizen, I can apply for a rebate from the State Dept of Revenue for part of the property tax included in my rent. It makes sense, I don't have any kids in school, why should I pay school tax? 50+ years of property tax is enough?

Renting is a ripoff. Your paying a landlord money you'll never see again. When you buy a house your paying yourself every month. In the longer run it'll end up cheaper to own a home.

You pay the school tax so kids can learn and get jobs. That way they pay into social security for older people so no one has to eat dog food.

Tax wouldnt be so bad if it wasnt so high while the politicians continued to give themselves raises while doing a worse and worse job. Tax also wouldnt be so bad if it wasnt taxed.

Not always, but generally yes.

People tend to underestimate how much their house actually cost them. When they sell it they often look at just the purchase and sale costs and say "I made 50k!", not counting interest payments, property taxes, renovations, etc. It's generally much closer to break even than people think (the last few years notwithstanding where housing prices in many areas have skyrocketed).

People also don't take into consideration that renting tends to be far cheaper (I admit, this is really region dependent), and if you use the excess money to invest, you can sometimes end up further ahead by renting a cheap place. If my payments are 2k a month less and I invest all that money, if I can get 5% return on it, that investment portfolio will be worth well over $1,000,000 after 25 years, likely ending up with more money in my pocket than if I bought a house.

But houses are much much safer investment tools, and kinda force people to invest their money, so it's the right fit for a lot of people.

Apparently I need to pay more school tax because reading comprehension is such a problem. I paid property tax for 50+ years. I can get a partial rebate for last year's tax, by state law. Is that okay with you?

I'm sorry. I won't apply for a rebate next year, obviously the schools need the money because reading comprehension is such a problem.

I said in my post, that you still pay property tax in your rent. After 50+ years of paying property tax, I get a partial rebate. By state law. I'm sorry that is impossible for you to understand.

I agree, property tax is stupid if it's your primary home. Property tax should be waived or at least drastically reduced for one's primary residence.

However if you own multiple homes you should feel the full effect of property tax.

Yeah, the concept is fucking insane, since that money has been taxed multiple times already. But that's government for you, it just keeps clawing and clawing and clawing until nothing is left.

It really depends on the area and market. It's generally cheaper to own than rent.

It's really not, and it's scary that people still believe this after multiple housing crashes including one that decimated the economy just a decade ago.

...property taxes are used to pay for local government. You couldn't afford to run local government without them, and the only way you could lower them is by cutting expenses which is something politicians hate doing.
