Yet many don't remember the internet pre-1993 when they started wiring the colleges and schools for internet and use.net etc took off.

I don't remember any major change in 2008. Was that when Youtube got ads, maybe?

Old social media was great though. Discord's great too, and in general a filtered environment's gonna be better for topical conversation, but you had the wildest shit happening in the free ranges of Yahoo Chatrooms.

I noticed a definite change in 2008 after joining the internet in 1998.

usenet predated 1993; it was just the year AOL gave its users access, leading to the collapse of netiquette due to the inability of the communities to absorb and properly assimilate all the newcomers

2007-2008 was considered to be the year smartphone internet users became widespread; there's since a bit of a socioeconomic-flavored bias against smartphone users by some of the "old guard" in internet communities

my only grievance with the mobile era is that ui/ux standards have been seriously dumbed down due to assumptions of the designers about users

also the age-old taboo of popups has made a comeback in the form of modal popups, which are arguably an even bigger pain in the ass

Was 2008 around the time Facebook could be used by everyone and not just people with college email addresses?

Why would they need to remember it was different pre-93 to remember it was different pre 2008? It was different in 2000.

It was 2008. Nobody shut the fuck up about Facebook in high school for at least two years, and I graduated in 2009.

I started using it in 93, but didn't start using it for my primary gaming news source or to get help with games until a few years later. It was just a novelty, and everyone still used magazines, even if they had it the internet.

It either wasn't well-developed enough to research things, or it never crossed anyone's mind to try, I guess.
