You obviously did a good job making sure your island was blocked off properly when you did it. I didn't put enough effort into it.

And I'm still convinced the game knows what you're trying to do and won't do it unless you actually do have every other space blocked off. There's definitely more to the determination than "random 3x3 free space".

yeah i was very meticulous, only thing left to worry about is the fact that the top 4 spots are in the same acre and i still see mixed messages about whether theres a limit

So I had Wisp last night and I literally could not find the 5th piece. I circled my island for like an hour and just...nothing.

There's gotta be an easier path to getting black cosmos than just crossbreeding a shit ton of orange ones from seed red and seed yellow that also doesn't include lucking into having cosmos be one of your native flowers so you can get a hybrid cosmos island (even two oranges from there hilariously only gives you a 18.75% chance).

I never had much trouble with black cosmos. Purple tulips and hyacinths however took forever for me

I have two 5x5 patches just of orange cosmos and they're only producing more oranges and occasionally yellows. I know it'll happen eventually but it's just annoying that there's no obvious way to speed it up.

It might just be because there's so few hybrids in that family to work with (only orange, pink, and black). And you need RR-YY to make black which is different than all other flower species (where it's RR-ss).

5x5 plots generally aren't that efficient in ACNH because the number of empty spaces doesn't affect breeding rates.

Assuming you have 13 flowers in the 5x5, the max new flowers from breeding you can get in a day are 4 and that would leave 5/13 that cant breed and can only replicate.

If you instead did:
XXOXX
OOOOO
XXOXX
OOOOO
XXOXX

For the same space and less flowers you can get up to 6 new flowers from breeding with no chance of replication of the oranges

And if you extend to 6x5 you can do pairs of another flower type in the empty rows for even more efficiency

Do you do that by simply ensuring every flower has one possible crossbreeding partner on any given day?

That's the simplest way to prevent it yes, just pair them off. You can have a flower touching multiple others and still prevent duplication like in the diamond pattern though.

If you take your 5x5 and make it like this instead, where X are the flowers:

OXOXO
XOXOX
OXOXO

That solves the problem too (gives 6 possible hybrids per day with no duplication and is 1 less parent flower) but is inefficient on space overall

Ok thats fine then, most people set them up the other way so I always assume when people say 5x5 its the other way, youre fine then, just bad luck on not getting blacks out of it.

Hopefully only 1 more day of all this mannequin nonsense cluttering up my island

Its gonna feel so sweet to delete that custom design and watch them all go poof and finally be able to move around and actually play again. I havent even watered my flowers since I started. Of course the last one is the spiciest one though since itll require the rock per acre limit to not actually exist in order to actually spawn so theres no guarantees yet

Also, if anyone gets Redd with Real Robust or Tremendous Statues that you arent going to buy or have extra lemme know, I have some extra real statues that ive picked up on Redd visits I can trade

might need to make a couple trips to someone's town to sell turnips.
