If you don't want kids, that's fine.
Mainly asking if you guys view it as, if you're going to have a child, might as well not make them an only child.

Do you see anything negative with only having one child, or would you want them to have a sibling?

Obviously, there's nothing actually negative about it regardless of your choice. Maybe I should say, is it more ideal to have more than one child if you're going to have children?

in some ways, i think it's a disservice to a child to not give them a sibling
2 is the right number of kids

I have 2. They're best friends. I can't imagine how bored my oldest would be if he didn't have his little sister.

I would prefer to have more than one, but having just one would still be an absolute win in my book.

My siblings were / are terrible people. I wouldn't mind having one child. Although I don't plan to have any.

Is being an only child that bad?
My nephew will likely be an only child. It's not inherently bad, but what's bad is a child that doesn't spend time with kids their age. Use a day care and preschool and have play dates as often as you can.

I like the idea of having a child, but the difficulty scares me and I have a hard time imagining having multiple kids.

Ya, this is what I'd think as well.

Hell, having multiple with the goal being so the kids aren't lonely only works if you have the kids close together as well

I have an older brother and sister, but they are 5 and 6 years older than me. So I never felt as if they were "friends" while growing up.

I certainly think it helps to have family near your age that can understand you. My sister and I are 2 1/2 years apart, and we fought constantly as kids, but somehow we ended up as the only other family to talk to about serious events.

Also, I couldn't tell you if it's actually true on a significant level, but there were several siblingless girls that I "dated" in what I now realize were really fucked up ways. There's some quasiFreudian big brother thing going on.

I can't really say, my life would have been better if I were an only child because my siblings were abusive. That's probably not the standard though...
I can relate and its probably more common than youd think.

Having siblings is bad because they may be abusive is as much of an untrue generalization as having an only child is bad because they will be lonely.

Socializing is important, less so where it comes from.

I feel like two is the ideal, but that's kind of been the mode in my family for awhile. I grew up with one sibling. My two sets of cousins I'm closer with were also families with two children each. Two of those cousins have had two children each themselves.

Three isn't that bad either, but I would definitely not want to go past that.

I think it's fine so long as you can avoid the traps of having only one kid.

For one you need make a concerted effort to make sure they are well socialized with kids their age
