I dont remember what the differences between the individual games are anymore, I just have a general positive memory of the series... but I think it hit diminishing returns near the end so the answer is probably 3.

A group of us are perfecting each one in the series. Having just done 2, it improved a lot of quality of life mechanics from 1 but the pacing, especially in Freezeman section and the airport just to get to Netopia is a real drag.
