I dont see why it is necessary as playing fighting games isnt some sort of competition where physicality/athleticism is a factor.I mean why would they do that when they dont even separate leagues via Controller used which is probably the closest thing that could be considered giving someone an advantage/disadvantage (For the most part it really doesnt btw). FFS there is that dude born with some condition where he is pretty much bed bound with limited arm control who plays with his face who can absolutely body a whole lot of able-bodied people out there. So to say women cant compete with the boys is kinda sexist tbh.

I wonder if they will allow transgender/non-binary people though. Because there are quite a few at these competitions and they compete fine with the guys. Will it backfire where a lot of people might claim to be trans or something to compete in the league which might be perceived as 'easier' to get that prize money? Who knows. But I will be very interested in how it will be handled.

on TC's favorite blogs there is.

Also, this likely has less to do with physical ability and more to do with marketing. Capcom is a business.

Because it will make the female players more comfortable to not be being gawked at, hit on, and have sexist comments made at them.

Lets face it, gamers have a reputation, and if this gets more people interested and increases the talent pool its a good thing.

Just because they're making a separate league for the female players doesn't necessarily mean that the female players aren't going to be allowed to compete against the male players at all. They'll probably still have the opportunity to also compete against the male players if they choose to, and I think at least a few of them would still take that opportunity.

The lack of diversity in "professional" gaming is a very real thing.

I think Capcom figures by closing the gender gap they open up competitive gaming to a very marginalized demographic.

Personally I think gamer culture is very toxic and it's nice to see a game publisher actually shining some light on this.

I feel like these measures always end up badly, basically furthering the divide between whatever two groups already exist. Rather than trying to figure out the issues, they just separate them out so as to not worry about it.

  1. These Tournaments don't have unlimited spots. Generally men sign up at far greater numbers thus skewing the numbers in favor of men and causing fewer women to sign up. This increases the number of participants and allows women a better shot at making it. I'm sure they'll one day do a combo Tourney based on the top from each.
  2. Look at how many nerds drool over females on twitch. This will just attract more of those losers watching the streams t catch a glimpse of a woman

Campcom is just making a smart business decision.

Then those women in the scene can feel free not to join it. However, this could be a very good thing to give some female gamers that be be intimidated by the current scene a chance to show their skills and build themselves up to be more confident entering the mixed ranks.

I understand the thought process here but it doesn't solve the actual problem, i.e. harassment and sexism in the gaming community. They shouldn't separate the female gamers. Instead they should penalize the people who are bringing the negativity.

I'm guessing the reason they don't do the latter is due to fear of losing fans and possibly some popular players.

Sounds like the kind of thing where the women's league won't be financially viable but will be subsidized by the men's tournaments because not having a third string tier league for women is unfair or something.

I don't mind it. Female gamers get harrased by men a lot, even competitors, so it offers a safer space.

Idunno about other genres, but there's no lack of diversity in fighting games. We have the whole damn rainbow, by race and gender.

That being said, that's mostly the regular FGC faces; plenty of nobodies can be major creeps.

They also do this for chess. The short answer is there's far more male players than female players so sheer probability means the women basically never get to compete in late stage tournaments. Only one woman has managed to make it into the final rounds of chess league so the women's chess league exists to give the female players more time in the spotlight.

They do, but that has proven not to work that well. The smash fanbase alone you would have to ban near half the players.
