Lets face it, gamers have a reputation, and if this gets more people interested and increases the talent pool its a good thing.

are they planning on having this thing attended by fans? the majority of gamers are male so that's going to happen anyway when they buy tickets to watch them play. unless they are planning on making this an all female thing which would be disastrous.

I'm not sure it does.

What if the girl champion is the best in the world? But she can't play the men? So she earns less prize money/sponsorships/ followers and is always seen as "The girl champion" rather than "The champion"

It also reinforces the notion that girls are inferior at video games and can't compete with men. Which I still don't think has been shown to be a biological thing, it could be a social one.

Also from a fan perspective it takes away some of the best potential match ups. If instead of seeing people based on their skills you're seeing people based on segregation.

Imagine if Capcom had a seperate comeptition for black people or gay people. The Internet would flip its shit.

I used to agree with the OP. Thought if women wanted to compete they should git gud. But that was my opinion 17 years ago.

Women's Leagues are fantastic things. They grow the base in terms of competitors and fans. Whether or not they have a physical disadvantage (sometimes they do, sometimes they don't), they do have very large disadvantages because of competitive culture.
Women have to break through the glass ceiling that men don't. They have to deal with more trolls, perverts, and other detractors. Women's leagues can greatly help to break these glass ceilings and provide a more even playing field. Put another way, basic leagues are inherently men's leagues, they don't have to deal with all of the prejudice and trolls women have to (just the normal amount); women's leagues puts them on an even footing.
They may also have a subconscious bias against them. There have been studies showing women doing better in chess against an opponent of an unknown gemder than against men (and I think other women).

Not to be dismissive, but women's leagues have the advantages of amateur leagues or minor leagues and then some. They help grow the base, grow spectators, and let more people have more fun.

A women's league shouldn't prohibit them from play in the main league. Checkout VKLiooon winning Hearthstone. She worked hard against diversity and still felt cheapened to be lauded as the first "female champion" of Hearthstone.

Will the womens league be expected to have equal prize pool even though the competition pool isnt that great? Then again if it does get an equivalent amount of viewers and generates an equivalent amount of fandom/revenue then the prize pool should be similar.

Exactly. Come to think of it pretty much all other competitive gaming communities that I used to follow besides Fighting Games seemed to lack black people involved. Imagine if Blizzard created a black league for Starcraft to 'encourage more black players'. The whole idea is absurd and offensive tbh.

With fighting games. Pretty much all of the top players who are from America are black btw. and often play with pad even though back in the day everyone was saying stick had an edge over pads. But leagues were never seperated via controller choice or something related to how you are born

That's because fighting games actually used to be a grassroots thing and a lot of lower income people got together to compete and have fun without worrying about appeasing the rich white people who want to make money off them. Sadly it's becoming so that's no longer the case. I am glad I got to enjoy the FGC before it got sterilized and turned into another thing for people to make money off of by appealing to upper-middle class white people who clutch pearls the minute a person of color who grew up in poverty doesn't speak and act like someone who got a liberal arts degree thinks they should.

This quote is super old. It's back from SRK in the early 2000s. Yeah he thought he would got robbed for being white. Nonbinary is not female. As for transwomen, probably. The main issue distinction between genders esports isn't physical but social and transwomen face similar social discrimination. Speed runners do just fine with being open to transwomen.

Plenty of other esports have prominent black contenders. Again, if they faced similar discrimination creating a glass ceiling an all black league could be in good tastes. It depends on the circumstances.

They also do this for chess. The short answer is there's far more male players than female players so sheer probability means the women basically never get to compete in late stage tournaments. Only one woman has managed to make it into the final rounds of chess league so the women's chess league exists to give the female players more time in the spotlight.

Well first the idea that Chess does this is as laughable as chess being a sport, and second chess shouldn't do it either.

Maybe the goal should be to kick out rapists and creeps then, idk. Making a women's only league will only appeal to lesbians and crazy women when your physical activity is limited to picking up a chess piece.

The problem isn't rapists and creeps. The problem is the women are bad because not enough of them are playing / practicing. The women's league is to drum up more female interest.

Not that rapists and creeps aren't there, but they are a very small part of the issue and are already banned/arrested when possible. No league in the world tolerates that shit.

Actually the fighting game community has a long time problem with a person arrested for domestic violence and accused of sexual assault by multiple people. This person was Noel Brown. He also harassed my ex-wife at a tournament once. Honestly I am not sure anything major was ever done to him because he was friends with the big wigs just like you only get banned from tournaments for racial slurs if you aren't friends with the right people.

Your basic 5k/10k road race is going to have divisions for not only gender but also age groups. Quite often tournaments are there to sap entry fees from the participants, not to determine who's actually the best, but overall winners are still a thing too.

Introducing additional divisions and getting a larger player base is a good thing.

He was banned in 2016 from both Capcom official and EVO events. That doesn't suddenly make everything great and cheery because he was just one of several who are just like him and doesn't undo any damage he's already done but as more time goes on people will begin taking this sort of thing more seriously and people like Noel won't be able to get away with it for as long as he did.

People actually are uncomfortable with the real reason that women don't enter these competitions, it's because their chance at winning in a competition that includes men and women is little to none. There is a biological reason for this. It's called the greater variability theory. Basically because men have an X and Y chromosome women have X and X chromosomes.

This means that in the male population there is a much greater amount of genetic variability then in the female population. Thats means for instance that if you look at the average height of men but then look for the tallest men and the shortest men you will find a greater frequency of a big swings amongst men then among women. This applies to physical traits and mental traits, even IQs. There are many more male geniuses then there are female geniuses.

There are also many more more male idiots who dropped out of highschool and can't pass the GED exam then there are females of the same ability. From an evolutionary perspective this makes a lot of sense, its basically nature saying we can gamble with the male, but we can't gamble with the female. The reason this works is because you have 1 male that is great at everything...great he can go out and have a thousand children, its great for the species, it doesn't matter if you have a bunch of males that are morons and fail...they won't have much offspring and thats ok. However women are reproductively limited and so nature doesn't take any chances.

The practical results of this with the topic at hand is that in any competition open to massive amounts of males and females that you can come up with, whether it involves physicality or not, if you are going to create a competition where the winner is going to be exceptionally talented at doing some specific thing or set of things, the person that is abolutely the best at doing that specific thing will virtually always be a man. Open up the record books and take a look.
