This is one of the reason I hated working retail especially when overnight. You get people like them that steal right in front of you and you can do nothing, but that your DM goes talk to you/scream at you about shrinkage and you should have call the cops. Guess what I did not my fault it took them an hour to get there.

This has nothing to do with California, its a Wal Greens policy issue. They had no security there to deter, and they're insured for theft so they'd prefer their employees not do anything because their life is more important/will cost them more than this petty loss...

That would 1, Prevent others from coming into the store, potentially costing them more money and 2. Lock their employees in the store with the criminals/give the criminals time to damage the store trying to get out. Again, they're insured for the theft. Losing a few 2 dollar items is nothing to them. Having to repair store windows or be held accountable if an employee gets hurt would cost them more.

We get shoplifters every day but stuff like this happens every week. Most of the time when the shift leader says theyre calling the police on the intercom the shoplifters stop and walk out. And most of the time we dont bother calling police because its just a waste of time.

Prop 47?

California Prop 47. This has frequently been brought up by the responding police officers and their attitude is basically not to bother calling them because were wasting our time & their time.

Even if the shoplifter sticks around long enough to get detained theyre released soon after because the amount they were stealing was less than $950 so its a just misdemeanor.

Yea when i worked retail, even if the cops came, 9/10 the suspect would be let go. They're given the option of a fine and a ban from the store, or going to jail + the fine....And if they go to jail they're let go in like a few hours if the total is under 1k. Most of the time calling the cops or threatening to is just a scare tactic to get them processed and out as quick as possible Due to company policy our loss prevention was so helpless that the cops even told some of us just to call 911 directly and not wait for our store agents. Ultimately corporate doesn't want to deal with bigger messes so they just take the hit, which for most large retailers is just a drop in the bucket.

Plus customers will always try to get involved by getting in the middle of it and offering to purchase what the person was going to steal so that we dont call the police. The times in which weve recovered the items those meddling customers havent stuck around long enough for us to scan all the items that were going to be taken.

*dumps items from backpack (which is also ours and taken from the back to school section) on the counter*

*scans*

okay all this toothpaste comes out to $237.94, wheres that lady that was giving us s*** and was offering to pay for it?

To be fair, even if it were not company policy to let them go I'd still let them go. I'm not taking a potential beating, stabbing, or shooting for billion dollar company paying me minimum wage.

We have armed security but theyre not here for the merchandise, theyre here to protect us.

Theyll help us kick out shoplifters and crazy people but theyre not supposed to do merchandise retrieval. But we appreciate when they do.

Its just misdemeanors unless its more than $950. I dont know if taxes factor into it.

it doesn't but it goes by MSRP if i recall correctly. So if the item is marked down the price as far as theft goes is still whatever the original tag says.

True, but, then again, that would have shut down business, costing more than what they took.
