The remake is basically a new game. Same setting and characters, but the story is entirely different. I like that. It's what a remake should be.

I know the main salt comes from the story being split up. But, at least according to Google, most players take as long to complete the remake as they do the original, not accounting for people playing FF7 as young kids who are bad at games and thus taking longer. It's a comparable entertainment value.

game remakes are supposed to take the original game, update the visuals and QOL for modern systems, and make additions/balance edits where applicable.

FF7R is if Nintendo, when making Mario All-Stars, decided to give Mario a permanent fire-flower, change the gameplay to run-n-gun, and change the story so that the villain was that blonde bowser with the monkey gun from the movie.

This isn't a remake at all and shouldn't be what people want.

Now to be fair, the idea isn't bad for a sequel, but heavily marketing it as a remake is a bad move.

Every single instance before then, from Mario All Stars, to Pokmon Fire Red and Soul Silver, to Megaman Maverick Hunter X, were considered remakes. All of them retained the core gameplay and story from their original releases, and managed to add new story and content without turning the original into a bad-fanfiction mockery of the original >_>

It's about as much a remake of FFVII as Terminator Genisys is a remake of the first Terminator movie.

FRLG/HGSS aren't at all like Mario All Stars, though. All Stars is the same games with new graphics, but the Pokemon remakes are the plots and layouts of the original games with the new systems, content, QoL changes, the works.

There wasn't exactly much of a point to remasters before 7th gen consoles.

It's a reimagining and has been since they dropped the turned-based battle system.

Call it what you want. I hope more games are reimagined / remade / remastered like this in future.
