Playing through Dark Souls again(maybe the whole trilogy) because of the GOTD. Revisiting some of my favorites.

Anyway. Holy shit I forgot how awful the Lost Izalith is. Only to be capped off with something worse. Dark Souls is a classic, but this part alone prevents it from being the best. Semi-interested on how Dark Souls II feels after having not played it in a bit.

The entire back half of DkS disqualifies it from the GotD title

It's a dip after O&S for sure. Lost izalith is easily the worst area with the worst boss. However playing through it again I appreciate Tomb of the Giants more than I used to.

Finished. Now just finishing up achievements on the PC version for fun.

Will expand thoughts later. Seeing as this was my first play through in a few years (Last one...probably prior release to 2), and having played through everything else(2, 3, Bloodborne, Sekiro) at least once or twice since then.

Of all the post-O&S places, Lost Izalith is really the only one that I think is bad. But even still, its aesthetic design works well. Tomb and New Londo could use a little more variety between the two of them, but part of what I like about the design decision of post-O&S is that you return to these spots that feel like they're big next steps. My issue is that Lost Izalith is the only one that feels properly forecast. Catacombs should've been more required or non-accessible. Duke's Archives could've been more looming. Stuff like that.

A worse design is Royal Rat Authority. Thankfully it's tucked away in a corner that's tough to find and you have absolutely no reason to kill the thing anyway. Unless you're one of the weirdos that likes to acid surge people's equipment.

Unlike Bed of Chaos which is required to beat the game so yeah fuck that noise worst boss hands down

Its aesthetic would be better if the lava brightness was set lower than sun-level

I didn't hate Bed of Chaos as much as I hated the five minute trek through lava that you have to take every time you die to it, how did someone design that part of the level and not trash it immediately

pretty much every boss has an annoying walk back to it but that one was by far the worst

Bed of Chaos is absolutely terrible. Hated that boss so much. The amount of times I was about to jump onto the damn branch, and got clipped by its "hands" to fall to my death. And even while running through the last bit to try and kill the thing, and suddenly being lit on fire.

Yeah, I hated it too.

As a legit boss? Sure yea technically not great

As a gimmick boss and just for utter hilarity of getting nope'd out of existence by what amounts to a living tree? A+

Yeah a closer bonfire would have fixed a lot. A big reason why everyone hates the guy is bc you have a 90% chance of getting dead at least once and then have to embark on another journey to Mordor all over again.

Han I can't see any of the menace on account of being blinded by the sun lava

The worst part of the whole fight is sometimes you can get stuck and all of a sudden you like get hit by a weird hitbox and unstuck into a pit.

So just expanding on my playthrough:

-Everything leading up to the Lord Vessel is deadset perfect. The design, soundtrack, pacing ect, is perfect.
-Post Lordvessel is great! Just not as good.
-Like I said earlier, when it first came out I probably had tomb of the giants near the bottom if not the worse area in the game. Nito near the bottom as well for bosses probably, Lost Izalith maybe just a tad higher, liked it a bit more. But man, going through Izalith was a nightmare it's too bright, the lava walking sound effect is atrociously loud and of course Bed of Chaos is by none one of the biggest drops of quality in a top-notch video game that I can think of.

I know there are gimmick bosses in the series. Dragon God before it...was OK nothing spectacular, especially compared to what was before it. Bed of Chaos was just nightmare inducing rage. Why they made you have to make that jump is beyond me.

-Upgrade and reinforcing mechanic is still annoying. Not so much the system, but the fact you have to run back n fourth between several smith's to get something made. In practice, or the idea of for story or lore reasons I like that there is multiple smith's. Gameplay not so much,
-Speaking of Smith's...the guy in the catacombs whose name I am blanking on. Was his voice also gratingly loud and static? Hurt my ears every time he talked.

-New Londo Ruins is still fantastic. I love everything about it
-Never hated too much on Blighttown. However playing with a smooth 60 is a much better experience for the level for everything and everyone involved
-Demon's Ruins not as bad as I remember.
-Catacombs along with Tomb of the Giants are two area's I appreciate a bit more since I've gotten older.
-Duke's Archives is a lot better than I remember.

Overall first 70% of the game is on pace for me to best all-time material, even taking into the account of the clunky upgrade system and jumping mechanic. Last 30% does dip, but nothing major but enough that the quality is dipping. For every bright spot in the later parts of the game, something else has to drag it down. Whether it being re-used bosses, obnoxiously loud sound effects for walking in the lava. Where as that first 70% was a super smooth cohesive unit running at 100% efficiency.

Going to jump into 2 probably sometime this week. I have a soft spot for 2. It was when it was my peak interest in the series. Beat the game within the first 2 days I think. Played it a couple times since it first came out, but according to Steam I haven't touched it in 4 years.

Final thought.

Gwyn on NG+ is infinitely harder than normal NG. Breezed through everyone else.

My game is glitched apparently, and won't save Grant and Sanctus to my inventory for some unforeseen reason. Killed Leeroy twice, picked up his weapon and shield on both playthroughs, but not showing up in my inventory, twice. Guess no Knight's honor for me.
