"A New Jersey driver crashed head-on into a pole after passing out from wearing an N95 mask for hours, police said Friday.
Lincoln Park police believe that the driver, who was not named, lost consciousness while behind the wheel Thursday from lack of oxygen and breathing in excessive carbon dioxide thanks to the mask, the department wrote on Facebook."

Bullshit, I've had to wear those hours at a time at my job from getting airborne lead poisoning. Something fishy going on like an insurance scam.

No, it makes sense. They aren't intended to be worn for prolonged periods. You're breathing your own air, so the amount of oxygen diminishes.

They have little square ventilation units on the front to breathe through.

say you put it on and you out. Then you touch stuff. You don't want to touch your mask if you're gonna wear it again, you risk infecting the mask and/or touching your face in the process.

So you leave it on and drive wearing it to wherever you are going to go if you're still going to be out.

Seems like most people will overall be okay wearing them, but apparently it can happen.

It would depend on the mask model and personal risk factors but it is possible, Dr. Stavros G. Christoudias, a surgeon in Teaneck, told NJ Advance Media.
It would also depend on the person wearing the mask, he said. They could have a host of factors making them susceptible as well, like obesity, smoking, emphysema, COPD, etc.

In fact, a study reported in 2005 by the U.S. National Library of Medicine concluded that dizziness, headache and shortness of breath are commonly experienced by the medical staff wearing N95 masks.

Youd have to be very paranoid to not take off the mask if youre having that much trouble breathing and in your own car.
