Skyrim can't establish itself as the favorite against anything in this match IMO. The Mario Kart series is too weird. It'll need a very strong showing against Pokemon to raise its stock with me.

Also, the who else thinks the highly anticipated Witcher vs Skyrim could suddenly wind up as Persona vs Dark Souls? I never would have considered Witcher losing early after Round 2, but Round 3 has been humbling for most of the heavy hitters.

I feel like Dark Souls probably took itself out of the running. It did very well against MGS5, but didn't really live up to the expectations it needed to be a Skyrim killer.

Persona 5 is a wildcard, which is thematically fitting.

mk8 beat uncharted 4 60-40, winner of 200+ goty awards. it has a shiny nintendo logo on it.

smg 1 & 2 have never performed well in these contests. they were critically acclaimed upon release but seem not to have lasting appeal on this site. smb3/w/64 beat them by huge margins.

i love persona 5 but barring a rally it hasnt got a chance against witcher 3. Maybe in an alternate universe where atlus had made a switch port.

dragon age won over 100+ GOTY awards and how did that do?

uncharted 4 is probably the weakest uncharted game. FFXIV is an MMO. MK barely got 60 on them. Games like Galaxy and Odyssey would destroy it

odyssey more so.

i mean id take both Pokemon and Nier over MK easily.

skyrim probably beats both in the low 50s.

and id put maruo galazy 2 above both pokemon and nier as well or at least on the same level

I'm really proud of Nier. I still remember when this series was getting made fun of by 'professional' reviewers who couldn't follow directions. Now it's hanging with a nostalgic mainline Pokemon game - a kneecapped one, but Pokemon nonetheless.

Yeah, I never really considered NieR as a world beater, but that it could take down a weaker G/S/C proxy. A close match just means the winner gets to lead at the freeze before rolling over to Skyrim's late start.

Yeah, this is a multi million selling action RPG that appeals to the kinda audience Gamefaqs still has. Seems weird if people thought pre-contest it wouldn't have a chance against a Pokemon remake.

Nier 1 had a reviewer abandon it and write a scathing review because he couldn't follow the marker on the minimap and kept fishing in the wrong spot. The choice quote "my spirit is broken and the damage is done" is an in-joke among my friends group.

the original nier was a very flawed game technically. The story philosophy and narrative were still great but automata just outs Taros vision in a more polished package. But even automata has issues such as level design and combat being a bit shallow

but that story man....route C and Route E are INSANE

The original Nier lacked an iconic character design like 2B to get people to try it, and the combat was pretty lackluster. Its the definition of a cult classic.

The Bethesda formula still hasn't been emulated well by any other WRPG, the whole "every NPC is unique with their own behaviors and lives, every item is interactable, etc". Witcher 3 is a more polished version of a different style of WRPG thats more story focused and less interaction with the world.

but even the type of game skyrim is. Its old now. Bethesda need to evolve with ES6

Pokemon does not have a good night vote and morning vote, so Nier can use trends to reverse this as long as it doesn't fall into a deep hole before then. I think it can come back from a lead of 300 or less using only trends, anything more than that would probably require the help of rallies.

odyssey more so.

don't get me wrong. smg2 was probably the last nintendo game i really enjoyed before giving up on nintendo in favor of sony/pc/mobile in the current gen. but fans criticized it for being linear & too derivative of smg1.

smg1 is likely more popular than smg2 because it at least took the series in a new direction. and this was how it did in similar contests:

in 2010 gotd smg1 beat annual pokerehash ruby/sapphire/emerald by a 59-41 margin, then lost to zelda:tp, a game that received decent critical acclaim upon release but isn't particularly popular among the fanbase due to being too derivative & having too much padding. (edit: thanks tre for correcting me on smg1-rse margin.)

in 2009 smg1 lost to cod4. yes, cod4.
