Its for a performance degree (classical), so I dont do any composition for the degree. Though I do have some compositions, and I also write songs in my band

Badass man! I have a music education degree. Percussionist here.

Considering going back for my masters in music performance, but wont pay for it. Hoping to get a TA position teaching a university drumline. Gotta start practicing seriously again though.

You hoping to play in an orchestra full time?

Oh I see. I suppose so lol. It definitely is exciting to get to go for free. Especially to such a prestigious conservatory

Oh damn, great school to study music! One of my good friends got his masters at Julliard and is doing the orchestral route.

Fuckin brutal career path. My friend practices about 8 hours a day constantly taking auditions. Has been runner up to a few but orchestras, but nothing but sub lists still.

Yeah, it can definitely be a long road. Luckily I play jazz gigs regularly and also have other things going on so I can make some cash and live while pursuing it.

What does your friend play? I auditioned (and got into) MSM, Juilliard, Colburn, IU, and BU, and almost did Juilliard, but MSM just gave me more cash and I like the teacher more. Plus, New York is the place Id most like to be, so I chose MSM over the other places.

Upright bass. Going for a classical degree, though I also play jazz and a whole slew of other styles on upright and electric.

Do jazz gigs pay well? My friend is a percussionist. Gotta be rough for yall in the performing arts who arent able to gig right now.

Is there any musicians relief fund for NYC to help you guys out currently?

depends on a lot of things. sometimes people want standards playing in the background while they have their convention or meeting -- those tend to pay pretty well.

union gigs also tend to pay pretty well.

weekly "jazz night" gigs at pubs sometimes pay well, but it's a bit of a tossup.

it also varies a lot depending on where you are

Jazz gigs are on a spectrum. Im at a point where I only accept well-paying or musically fulfilling ones, but the lowballs are definitely out there.

Im not sure about NYC cause Im not living there yet. But Arizona does have one.

what does a masters in music performance entail exactly?

I always thought of masters degrees as more academically focused things while music performance is kinda... not? at least as far as I'm aware? something like a degree in composition seems normal to me but performance is weird for some reason

Essentially, studying with a private teacher for two years at a very intense level. I take further advanced theory, composition, and history courses as well, but the main idea is that it gives me two more years surrounded by equally prestigious musicians my age to work with faculty and get better prepared for auditions. To teach an instrument at a college level, a Masters is usually required (a Doctorate often for universities), and some orchestras wont give you an audition unless you have a Masters (or equivalent) to show that you are at a certain level of playing.
