I actally spent like 15 minutes mulling over getting Utawarerumono. Being mostly VN is fine, my favorite games are literally Umineko and House in Fata Morgana, but basically every single review was pretty adamant about how much pointless dumb Fanservice the game has, and that's just not something I am interested in dealing with at all. There's no VN I've tried so far where I was able to get over it.

the duology aren't any worse than Danganronpa. I definitely agree that stuff shouldn't be in those kinds of games but they aren't a particularly egregious example. the first game on PC though was definitely a product of its time and is what you'd expect of an early 2000s VN. the remake of the first game will likely get rid of all that stuff.

There is fanservice in Utawarerumono but I'd say it's relatively tame by VN standards.

There were just so many reviews that basically said this game was tits out all the time, and the art style looks so on the nose like a particular...style.

Struggling to think of a good comparison here, but at least I am comfortable saying that this much is a blatant mis-characterization.

I'd say there's more fanservice than in a game like Steins;Gate (basing this on the anime) but less than in a game like Muv-Luv. Don't know if that helps at all.

Not on sale on the UK store. Also Cold Steel 1 is a great place to start if you want to jump in. It's not the first game in the series but you can still enjoy at least the first 2 games without any knowledge of the other games.

As someone who has barely touched a Trails game outside of Cold Steel, they are still fantastic games without the prior entries.

That said, if you think you may want to play them one day, might be safer to nab Tokyo Xanadu instead and see how you like it. It's the first game in the "series" I played (not actually connected), and it's what got me into it. I actually just repurchased it in this sale because I had bought it physically before back when that was the cheaper option...at $41.

They're a nice aesthetic and halfway decent though not great gameplay.

Definitely do not go into them expecting a cool/good Persona side story.

They're fun if you're a novice rhythm game player (like me), although P4DAN is the only one that feels like they put actual effort into making. I think it has a fun story, but it's certainly nothing on the level of the mainline games or even the Arena games.
