I haven't played FFVIIR but usually in gaming this device is used for 2 reasons

1. As a gameplay stand in for a loading screen

2. Immersive VR

I'm guessing it's 1. Take out the squeeze and all you have left is a loading screen or an elevator/door that takes really really really long to arrive/open.

Look at the God of War reboot where they bragged about not having loading screens and instead you have to stand there doing fuck all as a door appears, then run in circles doing fuck all until the game loads to do fast travel.

Takes about 4 times as long as a screen but hey there isn't one!

I doubt it.

But either way to me it's the same thing.

I know some gamers disagree but to me "Wait here and do fuck all while we load" is just as immersion breaking as "Look at this loading screen and do Fuck All while we load"

I mean it's still the same damn thing. It's stil screaming at every synapse "This is a fake video game you are playing."

I'm more immersed by the story and worlds of video games than by how they do their loading.

2. Actually it is proven on the FF7r board that many of them take place when nothing is being loaded. Maybe in some parts they do it for that, but in others, users have pointed out the area is already complete and they just shoved it in there.

You're right now that I think about it. A lot of the shimmying is clearly not taking you to a new area in FF7.

Some squeezy parts are done to force a specific camera transition like the collapsed highway to sector 6 has a lot of them that are like only a few steps at most.

But that said, I feel like the appropriate resolution to the loading screen issue is more granular memory modules.

I mean, unless somebody just screwed up as a designer, you're generally playing a lot longer than you're waiting for load screens, even back on the PS1. Why not cut chunks from a full level/area to maybe a quarter that size and keep the four "nearest" modules in memory?

Some of them probably did mask load times, but as someone pointed out there is no way the ones in Wall Market serve that purpose. I assume it was an aesthetic thing since they're back alleys, but god that was tedious
