i didnt expect kh3 to choke this hard on portal 2. the gummi ship segments, disney worlds, combat & graphics improved over the 2 prior mainline kh games.

People were disappointed with the story. Also the combat in KH2 > KH3

Literally just the main story, honestly.

Gameplay was great, world design was great, the actual dialogue between characters was probably the best it's ever been (ie an F instead of an F-)

It's just the main plot was paced so insanely sloppily and shit wasn't really explained, but I did 't really care cause I expected it.

Also Portal is just straight up the better game

People aren't thirteen anymore and realized the story and dialog were always embarrassing.

I won't hear anything about the worlds being worse because KH1 is still beloved and half of the worlds are garbage from a level design perspective.

People finally woke up and realized those games were never good. The first game was passable, but the second pulled away from what made the first one so popular, specifically the Final Fantasy tie-ins.

Add to that the anime bullshit "story" and you have KH3 as a case study in how to do everything possible to kill a series.

As much as people insist they are good and keep going on about how easy they are to play now, having a half dozen side games you have to play that originated on handhelds was never going to do anything but alienate a huge portion of people, and also ended up generating a Sonic-esque portion of the fandom as well.

Uhh the second game had way more Final Fantasy tie-in than the first game. You even got FF characters in your party! The third game dropped it completely so maybe you meant that

It seemed the story is what primarily pissed people off. Also the lack of critical mode at launch which fixed a chunk of other issues some people had before it was added (it being too easy, attractions making the game even easier, etc etc).

I personally still loved it and Remind was fantastic. Data Org 2 Electric Boogaloo and the secret boss were top tier and fun/frustrating as fuck to fight. Though I'd probably give the edge to KH2's combat style as well even though 3's was also good to me (what can I say I loved the drive forms and reaction commands)

All sorts of stuff really. KH got hit by too many portable/side games that made the plot crazier and more confusing for lots of people. Squares continually declining fan base because they had years of nothing or games that received very mixed reception. KH3 is a really fun game, but it took a million years since KH2 and then all the story stuff you wanted to see wrapped up in KH3 got pushed to the last hour or two of the game so a lot of great moments were sadly rushed and didnt feel like they paid off as a result.

KH3 itself being far more inaccessible is probably the biggest knock against it, but plenty of people had reason to dislike it too. Its not like it really did anything the BEST except the obvious categories like graphics

Exactly this, plus the story being utterly impenetrable to anyone who didn't spend the last 10 years playing all the spin-offs. To top it all off, the gameplay still ended up inferior to KH2's lightning in a bottle, which they've been trying and failing to recapture ever since. (Apparently Re:Mind almost completely closes this gap, but I haven't played it yet.)

It really doesn't. It does include some content that's nearly as good as KHIIFM, but you can't change the floaty gameplay.

I mean yes, you're right, but I don't think you can justify a KHIII to begin with without those games.

KHII's ending was a real, satisfying ending that crossed the ts and dotted the is. If they never made another one it would have been a great ending. KHIII would have to have been completely different from the game we have, and who knows what that version of the game might have looked like. Might have sucked even harder.

Apparently it did address a lot of that! All the major KH speedrunners were very ehh on KH3 before it dropped and ecstatic afterward, from what I know.

Imagine how KH would be viewed by the community if it went out on KH2 and dropped the mic.

Oh I agree. The gaming community's lust for sequels no matter the context is ridiculous. Sometimes it's ok to just let shit end on a high note.

Kh1-CoM-Kh2 is a pretty self contained, complete arc in and of itself. If we had to have more money printing sequels, they should have ditched the old cast entirely and done something completely different. There's so much you could do with DisneyFF, Sora and all the baggage that comes with him never had to be a permanent fixture.

Turns out people who are all about the gameplay love that update because it has amazing gameplay! It's pretty well accepted that Limitcut's bosses are the best in the entire series.

This is a 2019 game competing with a 2004 game, and only barely edging it out in just SOME aspects (and a clear failure in the remaining aspects, including story)
