my sealed pool I just started has two palladium myrs and three Warden of the Woods

turn four warden of the woods is cruel and I love it

(the odds of getting three of the same uncommon in six packs must be crazy low, right?)

I dont think arena does pack collation so its really the same as getting any three uncommons together. which is to say yes its low, but also not really that crazy.

I think what makes it so bad is unlike most bomby formats where the bombs are at rare, there are common bombs which makes it way more luck based then usual. The power gulf between lanowar visionary and the rest of greens commons is absurd. Same with grasp of darkness, scorching dragon fire, the white 2/3 that gives two +1/+1 counters.

The good commons are insane and the bad ones are unplayable. Makes draft a really not fun experience sometimes

So if I craft a Winota playset, I'll be able to use them in Standard but I'll still get wildcards for the Historic ban?

https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/magic-digital/historic-suspension-announcement-2019-12-10

For example: A player has collected two copies of Card X when it is banned in Standard, and they receive two Wildcards at that time. Later, the card is also banned in Historic. Though they still have two copies, they won't receive additional Wildcards because they've already been reimbursed for the copies they have. However, if they had crafted (or otherwise collected) more copies between the Standard ban and the Historic ban, they would receive reimbursement for those new copies after the Historic ban.

I think so. So free cards if you don't already have a playset?

I don't understand why people keep saying the jumpstart event is pricey or in some way a bad value. 400 gems = 2 packs for any set, 400 for the event is 2-4 rares/mythics from the packs plus two from ICRs.

The best pair options I've gotten were Teferi/Mill (Rogues is also really good with Mill) and Vampires/Vampires with Vito and Exquisite Blood.

Feathered Friends/Above the Clouds ended up being one of the worst combos I have had. You'd think (or I did) U/W fliers would be good but it didn't come together well.

The mythics in Double Masters so far are killer. The rares, not so much. Feels kinda hard to justify the pack costs of these given what we've seen so far, but we'll see as the week goes on.

Average price of the mythics revealed so far is like $45, and Force of Will is likely to be in here too as it was on the leaked list which so far has been accurate.

6 dual lands... that's, odd. Two returning mechanics? Probably Landfall and Devoid.

Set boosters sound like another step in the growing divide between products for players and products for collectors. Imagine if one of those is an ultra rare chase OG Black Lotus art signed by Christopher Rush but printed on a totally different type of card stock. Cool? Yes. Useful? No. Rudy (Alpha Investments) keeps talking about how he thinks WotC is going down the road sports cards have gone down and it seems he's right.

I don't see any reason Devoid has to be tied to Eldrazi. Ghostfire may not have Devoid keyworded to it but it has the mechanic and it isn't connected to the eldrazi. In fact, it's the Ugin reprint that made me think it was a good possibility.

Also I'm curious where MaRo said Devoid was one of the most unpopular mechanics ever. From what I've seen he's said that players didn't like a keyword that in their minds "did nothing" but on the flip side they also really liked "colorless matters". By that logic players actually did like Devoid, they just nitpicked the fact that WotC introduced a keyword as short hand (Devoid rather than "this card is colorless").

Where do y'all usually post? This single topic has been more entertaining and relevant than most of the topics on the actual MTG board on this website, which seems to be about little more than Commander (something I am probably never playing), made-up cards (complete waste of my time) and news about new products (I get this on FB every day).

The Historic event was an absolute blast and did its job on me - I dropped a bit of money to get the cards and wildcards I needed to build some sweet decks. My favourites at the moment are Kethis Combo, Golos Field, and Goblins.

it just doesnt seem like it relates to anything going on on the plane if the Eldrazi arent there and Ugin probably isnt either

I think the returning mechanics are landfall and quests, maybe traps instead. I get the impression they really want to focus on the stuff people liked from the original two Zendikar sets.

my guess is the New mechanic that's a spin on a popular theme will be another new take on Allies.

I was remembering wrong

https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/making-magic/storm-scale-zendikar-and-battle-zendikar-2016-11-21

it just was not popular rather than super unpopular. The actual keyword devoid coming back still seems really unlikely, but they could do that sort of colorless card again.

also this reminded me that Awaken was well received, so thats a strong candidate for a return too

Traps could also be quite good. I didn't give much thought to quests because they're a lot like sagas but with far less design flexibility and I think with how much anger/angst there still is regarding 'Nissa who wins the game' that Awaken could definitely receive some backlash.

edit: ive seen a more direct quote of Maros words and the new mechanic is supposed to be a Zendikar twist on a popular theme, so allies wouldn actually make sense since thats already a Zendikar thing

Yeah I agree, I don't doubt Allies are returning because that was something they know they missed in BFZ. But also, Allies are a tribe, not a mechanic, and MaRo is generally pretty deliberate about describing things like that. He says it's a mechanic they "brought" to Zendikar and tweaked.

Personally I'm convinced it's going to be a variant of Explore. Pretty popular mechanic, easy to reflavor or tweak mechanically to work better on Zendikar. and they could buff it by making it put lands into play to make Landfall and ramp decks even better

Temur Rec Field in Historic is a blast to play but I am leaning towards it being banned after the Open solves the format.

Also it's just godawful in BO1 so I'm definitely not entering. I can't imagine it being a good choice unless the meta eats itself and becomes mostly anti-anti-field decks.
