I have to ask - why on earth am I still getting Potions and such from boxes when I can't use items at all in in hard mode? That just seems like a taunt more than anything else.

Although I admit that I'm confused as to why I'm fighting the Whispers and Ivan Ooze.

I guess the characters are fighting their destiny? I don't see why anybody but Aerith (who is so much better now btw) would have motivation to do so.

Yeah, that's one of the criticisms I've heard that I don't have an answer for at the moment. If you wanna play with Destiny and timelines, etc. go for it, but the party's motivating factors seem questionable at the very end. Sephiroth seems to want them to fight that thing, so why do they, exactly?

Well the original ending was that humanity was completely wiped out in 500 years so it wasn't exactly a good ending. I don't know how the party would know that though

If these changes a) alter the story enough to prevent it slowing way down in certain places and b) make the ending more satisfying, then great, because those are FF7's biggest flaws imo

Thats not the original ending. All we see is that Midgar itself is abandoned in 500 years. We know nothing about the rest of the world.

I always interpreted Midgar being abandoned as people breaking their reliance on mako, which is a good thing. It was always unclear if the rest of the world used it though. Junon makes sense to and Nibelheim has a reactor. Otherwise it doesn't seem to be the case.

Wasn't one of the points of the big war that Wutai was the only place left that didn't agree to use Shinra's mako energy? I was under the assumption that, for the most part, the entire planet makes use of it.

Ah I guess you're right. I never really delved too deep into the story not presented in the original game. I guess it's possible each town has an unseen reactor as you need to travel a bit to reach Nibelheim's.

I guess the explanation is that Sephiroth knows he is defeated in the original story and is giving the party visions that look bad so they will fuck up the future and he wins?

Sephiroth loses but Aerith dies, Meteor collides with the planet, Midgar is ruined etc. So show them all that and they do things differently and maybe the outcome changes.

I guess this is all leading to a timeline where Sephiroth is defeated but Zack, Aeris, Biggs, Wedge etc are alive, the planet is unharmed, etc. Fanservicey but not the worst thing I guess.

I think she probably dies but maybe not where she did in the original

Which will cause a huge backlash, especially if she doesn't actually die until the next episode

There're few more well known gaming spoilers than Aerith dies. I hope she does die in the same place, but that the makes it seem like she won't. That's probably the best way they can give it the surprising reveal it had in the original (if you played it early).

I am still sorta worried they might put Tifa on the chopping block. Like that bit during that horseman fight with Tifa slowmo pushing Aerith out of the way of getting rekt before Cloud manages to intervene.

I think it's pretty clear the Barrett death was the replacement for Aerith's death here. They teased the Tifa death but then came out of left field with that. They probably won't use the same gimmick again.

The more I hear about and think about it, I don't necessarily believe we'll see much more of Zack, or at least not in "present day" (whatever that means now)

The whole thing with showing Zack alive could just be their very fan service-y way of illustrating that the events with the party and the whisper boss had an impact on numerous timelines. I don't think Zack is alive in the party's timeline or ever will be. But that was just a "cool" way to express the consequences of defeating Destiny.

Maybe it was actually a Nomura tease for Crisis Core 2: Still Kickin'. He loves teasing future games!

I went into this game with negative expectations but came out pleasantly surprised.

Bit disappointed that Red looks like a situation where they wanted to make him playable but ran out of time. He was still pretty great though.

Yeah it felt like Red was there for quite a long time. Every time he was in the party and I couldn't play as him it was a bummer. He's probably my favourite character in the game.

Someone already hacked save files for this and found Red is completely functional as a player (barring having no abilities or way to change his equipment/Materia), so yeah

I kinda preferred Red as a guest character for the few occasions he was able to add on to my 3 person party. The game had a few issues with balancing character use, both Barrett and Aeris disappeared for large portions of the game. Obviously that is tied to the story, but some of it could have been avoided, such as them lengthening the Train Graveyard sequence instead of getting back to Barrett. Having Red help in battle without taking up a character slot was a fun way to add him, but I only really played as Cloud anyway so maybe I might feel differently if I switched more.

Is there any precedent for a party member joining that late in the game? Magus in Chrono Trigger I suppose?

In Ni No Kuni the 4th party member joins in what is essentially almost the post game.

I remember bringing this up before the game's release (theorized he wouldn't be playable because of that fact & it beared out), I think the best late-game argument at the time was FF6, but that was kind of a special case.

The best FF example I could think of was Amarant near the end of Disc 2 in FF9, which is more than halfway through the game but not that late. I know there's a ton of RPGs out there I haven't touched, but still, nothing in memory really compares.

Edit: ah david's got a solid example... but that late of an addition really seems absurd, I hope the post game is robust?

Tales of Graces F. Kinda. Granted that party member was controllable for small stints earlier in the game.

Dragon Age Origins fits the bill a bit better albeit the character is optional and has repercussions for selecting

Grandia's final party member joins pretty close to the end of the game.

It was really bugging me that the drink apparently did nothing.

Also I've got a little question. Basically whenever Cloud has his little grainy-screen head-holding flashbacks, that's nothing to do with the time ghosts, right? That's just messed up Cloud, as per original FF7.

Yeah, that's regular messed up Cloud.

There's a part where Hojo sees it happen and says something about his theory being confirmed. He's talking about the reunion theory and those visions are Cloud being drawn to reunite with Jenova (because of the cells inside of him.) It's the same thing plaguing the two hooded guys in Marle's apartment and the kid's hideout in Sector 5.

Oh wow. At the beginning of Chapter 5 there is actually an alternate scene. I'm assuming everyone got the part where Cloud and Tifa jump off the train together and he breaks the fall for her and all the fangirls squee.

Well there is also a version where Cloud jumps off alone and you have to meet up with Tifa later. You have to let the timer run out while on the train.

I just got the "bad" one for the first time. The mangy dog and Cloud's deadpan (though in fairness he knows no other form of pan) "what are you wearing?" was excellent
