the only time i really renamed characters is when the default is stupid, like in FF9 when Garnet wants to rename herself to Dagger, I just changed it to Garnet

I used to name characters after friends, but I don't do that anymore, except maybe for blank slate RPG characters, like earlier retro JRPGs.

I almost always rename the protagonist. I never bother renaming the other cast.

I renamed Vivi in FF9 to Pookie when I first played it. He just looked like a Pookie to me. Its still the name I think about when I think of the character.

It's weird, FF6 is the only one where I rename everybody. Every other RPG I leave it.
