The trainyard area went on a little too long, imo, but I like what they were going for. OG FFVII's enemy designs are really out there, and Remake does a pretty great job of contextualizing every single one of them. Maybe it tries a little too hard in some places and ends up stretching itself thin, but I enjoyed most of the new / expanded areas (with one exception near the end). The worldbuilding is pretty phenomenal.

There's actually a better grinding spot and Chadley access past that point if you want to hold off...if you really feel like you have to grind that out before post-game, where it'll be even easier.

That section and Reactor 5 in particular feels like it has so much padding.

Like on one hand they haven't done a bad job of fleshing it out but on the other hand if they kept things a bit closer to the original then I feel like they could have gone up to Nibelheim or something for the end of this game. Disclaimer being I haven't finished the game yet so don't know if that would make sense.

Which would have been fine if they expanded different parts of Midgar. I know they added a few extra areas but not many. I'm sure most people would have preferred to see more of actual Midgar rather than long ass windy dungeons for the sake of adding length

One thing I thought was very odd, and maybe I'm wrong but I tried really hard to look for it, in the brief times where you do have all 4 in the party towards the end it still won't let you switch up your combat team. The arena let's you pick your team, but there is never a point where you have all 4 and can access the arena.

Man I suck at this game. Doing Chapter 9, Hell House was really tough but I'm pretty sure it's more because I need to get good. I didn't die but I spent like 20 minutes in a stalemate running around healing while doing no damage. Every time there would be an opening to use a spell against his current weakness, his barrier would come up after I had already cast.

I audibly laughed when it appeared though. It's such a goofy enemy in the original game. People unfamilar with the original will probably think it's dumb but it was probably my favorite bit of fanservice yet. Assuming there is a Coliseum in Part 2 (it seems likely if Golden Saucer is included) then I wouldn't mind them reusing the gag with Ghost Ship, which is the other hilariously goofy FF7 enemy and was a pretty common final enemy in the Battle Square IIRC.

Yeah, I don't expect them to go in a completely different direction from here on out. Cloud has already flash forwarded to famous scenes from the original game, and the staff has said they want to still hit the main story beats from the original.

Had the exact same issue and it was basically the only fight in game it's happened to me with. Loved the fight for the throwback. Hated it for the actual mechanics and how long it took me. I think I just needed to be better at hitting weaknesses but that fight sucked so bad. That is going to be hellish on hard mode

Hell House was the hardest fight on the game.

Rufus was the best one.

Really all the one-on-one's were great, but I had just gotten counter from the Twin Stinger and retooled Cloud to be a physical only blocking, dodging, and parrying God, and it was basically like I was playing Metal Gear Rising, in every sense of the word really considering the setting of the fight.

That makes sense, I still didn't switch to Twin Stinger and found the Rufus fight to be pretty difficult, I even died once. And I was breezing through all the boss fights at that point & afterwards too. I was also never good at the MGS games I did play, lol...

I got it against Hell House without trying....somehow...

The actual trick I saw which I had been planning on doing was to just stagger Fat Chocobo in the VR battle and continuously spam True Strike with Tifa.

I mean I do it right in that video

Unbridled strength twice before the stagger and build up another full ATB meter

once the stagger happens unleash the full Triangle combo to build to 210%, then two True Strikes to get it up to 270% then just build up enough ATB for one more True Strike to hit 300%

the real trick is finding an enemy who's stagger lasts long enough to do all that

Finished getting all weapon skills. I'm actually loving the Shinra combat simulator. Grinding is fun and I feel like I'm just now finally learning how to play the game really well. Before I was always too anxious to get to the next story point to ever sit down and take my time mastering all the little things. Hell I played all the way to this point with only 2 weapon skills unlocked for each character.

How useful the skills have been so far on Hard

Cloud:
Triple Slash/Focused Thrust/Infinity's End > Blade Burst > Braver > Disorder

Triple Slash is your constant spam move, just always be using it.
Focused Thrust is a move I barely used at first but on hard the struggle to stagger is real.
Infinity's End is just so damn strong, when you stagger, use it. 9999.
Blade Burst is great for groups of weak enemies and also the shield soldiers.
Braver is fine, but its just not useful.
Disorder is only good in very specific fights and even then I never really use it.

Tifa:
True Strike > Focused Strike > Overpower > Starshower > Divekick > Chi Trap

True Strike Stagger % up!
Focused Strike Stagger is good
Overpower great for pressure and also paired with Elemental+Fire makes he tear through stuff
Starshower great for clusters of enemiers
Divekick mostly useless
Chi Trap haven't used it on hard

Unbridled Strength should be your best friend as Tifa. Use it twice then spam triangle

Barret:
Maximum Fury > Focused Shot > Smackdown/Point Blank/Charging Uppercut > Lifesaver

Maximum Fury is just a delight, great for groups.
Focused Shot same as other focused moves. Stagger is your friend
Smackdown I never use this on hard
Point Blank Also never use
Charging Uppercut Same
Lifesaver Useless

Aeris:
Arcane Ward > ATB Ward > Sorcerous Storm > Lustrous Shield > Ray of Judgment/Fleeting Familiar

Honestly you will almost always be using her charges for Cure or Magic but I digress.

Arcane Ward Great for bosses
ATB Ward Great in theory except it costs 2 charges
Sorcerous Storm very useful when MP is running low vs lightning weak enemies
Lustrous Shield If you have an extra charge somehow, this is a good skill to pop
Ray of Judgment useless, they always move out of the way, if they are staggered only
Fleeting Familiar useless

I just started up original VII again out of curiosity and it turns out Barret references pizza the first time youre on the train

Tifas trepidation about being involved in Avalanche seems to be totally invented for the remake though, thats interesting

Even when I got Cloud's new one I wouldn't change it.... because I would wait until the end of the battle to use his limit as the killing blow, and I would jump off my couch and make the cross slash motions in the air while he unleashed them.
