I've seen a lot of people saying they plan to buy electronics or other random extravagant/unnecessary things, and I just don't get it. Do they not realize that the shit has only just hit the fan?

those electronics or other random extravagant/unnecessary things just might be part of the key for the one buying such things as a way to pass the time until if/when we get back to the way things were before current conditions went south. it's ok if you don't get it, for all we know, you're content with all that you have. and of course we realize that the sh** has only just hit the fan, the guy running the country hasn't really been helping things too much (along with not being religious, i'm also not one for political stuffs)

as for me, I recently bought the digital variant Breath Of The Wild Bundle for the Switch. will get around to playing it rather soon, currently watching a playthrough of it, and it's absolutely gorgeous <3 <3 <3 .... i'm also eyeing older lego sets on ebay for future purchases. it's a set of 6 things, and brings me a hit of nostalgia

It is neither a tax credit nor taxable income.
Ah, I stand corrected.

still, if you dont need to spend it, dont. Who knows how long this pandemic will last? Buying shit now is just sort of reckless.

I get where you're coming from to an extent, you're not exactly wrong. But mental and emotional health are important too.

I kinda feel like if it drags on too long, a lot of people are going to be screwed regardless of if they bought something like that or not.... Unless they're blowing the whole thing or something.

The $1200 is just to postpone the inevitable riots and looting that are going to happen when this drags on to 2, 3, 4+ months. They're really going to be in a bind as the various state unemployment funds begin to run out.

They are, and having entertainment during this quarantine is therefore not something that should be overlooked or dismissed as a luxury (it technically is, but people are way too quick to ignore the practical value of luxuries), but making big purchases to that end still isn't a good idea. You can spend some of it on entertainment without blowing all of it and having nothing left for when it does actually become necessary.

Let's not forget that books can be stupid cheap. For the price of treating yourself at a fast food joint, you could get a book and make yourself a sandwich. You'd probably even benefit more health wise, and you'd have something to read for a week (or more).

^Games too. There's always great deals to be found if you're willing to look and not just buy new releases at MSRP.

But I've got enough games, books and movies to entertain me for several years at this point.

You don't even have to look that hard. Between Steam, GOG, and Humble, you can pretty much always find something you want discounted steeply enough to be a very economical buy, and they're not shy about sending email notifications about their sales.
