Regardless of all the RPG arguments ITT, this part is just totally absurd. The story in DS1 is awesome, and yes it is delivered through an unconventional more environmental narrative, but by the time you get to the Gwyn fight everyone understands the importance of what is happening in this world. It's honestly a pretty typical RPG story, just with a genius and risky presentation. If you think it's just bashing skeletons you missed out on the whole game.

It's not a story, it's a lore. The Souls games have the same amount of text as Zelda games. The story is a very secondary aspect of these games. Hidetaka Myazaki is not a story teller he's a pure game designer. And the From Software games are mostly action games with a japanese philosophy of tight gameplay and patterns.

Ah, right. And Zelda games don't have story, either.

Dark Souls yes.
Bloodborne not really.

Dark Souls is Action RPG. Standard.
Bloodborne is Action/Horror with RPG elements. Irregular. means can't be classified under either action or rpg, its like a weird mix with horror and atmospheric gameplay.

But to make things simple we can go along and say both are ARPG.

This is why metroidvania is a terrible term

SOTN is clearly an RPG at heart. Metroid is clearly not.

real quick, give me the rundown of what makes it (and dark souls) an RPG?

Despite it being notorious for it's difficulty, anybody can beat a dark souls game purely by grinding and i would argue that puts it closer to the RPG catagory than the action game with rpg mechanics catagory.

Quick and easy tip, if a game has one of these:

It's probably an RPG. Not always, but it's very likely!

I would say that Yakuza is as close to an RPG as you can get without actually being one.

Coming up with a better name for metroidvanias is tough. I always throw around "exploration platformer" in those discussions but it sounds kinda lame.

what little story there is in souls is a billion times more interesting than all the blandness in skyrim could ever hope to be.

Ironically, Skyrim (and ES in general) has really good lore that's largely buried in the background like DS's

Not at all. There is much more work done in the level design, gameplay, pattern, hitboxes of SOTN than in its stats system. The leveling of SOTN is completely broken and was probably thrown at the end of the development. In SOTN you unlock new physical capacities to reach new parts of the map, exactly like a Metroid game. Improving your stats doesn't unlock new part of the map, it's a very secondary system compared to all the possibiliies the physical engine of the game offers.
