I know I'm late to the party. But holy shit. Good ass movies. Hereditary was a lot better imo, actually felt dreadful for most of the movie. 'Subverted expectations' and all that shit too. I actually felt awful once it was over lmao

Midsommar was great but mostly for the cinematics and Florence Pugh lol story was aight but I really expected a more emotional reaction from the movie after watching Hereditary and I think I set my expectations too high. Also I think the story was a little too predictable, especially compared to Hereditary.

Can't wait to see what Ari Aster does next.

Hereditary was great. Midsommer however was one of the most boring movies I've ever seen.

I don't think I would consider Midsommar boring. It definitely wasn't as suspenseful as I was hoping though. But like most A24 movies, probably could have benefited from 20 - 30 minutes chopped off the run time.

Midsommar was trying way too hard to be a modern Wicker Man.

I didnt get Hereditary. Oh and it has one of the dumbest endings Ive ever seen in a long time. And the protagonist is so punchable.

I really liked Hereditary's ending. And that's the Naked Brother's Band Nickelodeon kid lmao

yea, I didn't like the ending, either.

the middle of the movie already tells you what's going on, and the ending just gives you all of this exposition, like it was too confusing, or something.

There's a disturbing tone to both movies that make them intriguing.

Midsommar felt like the director indulging too heavily in the imagery and stuff. Like, it was a decent watch, but it went way too fucking long. Parts of it, just the long, lingering shots on the revelling Swedes, felt kinda masturbatory. It reminded me of Joker - these continued shots of impactful imagery look nice and add to the atmosphere of the movie, but after a while it's like get to the fucking meat of the story and stop wasting my time.

Hereditary had a great conflict - is it real, or is Toni Collette going insane? Mental illness runs in their family, maybe she's cracking under the pressure of what's happening. It could even be argued that the eventual reveal of the cult kind of ruins that mystery, and takes such a broad leap into the surreal that it kinda ruins the movie - but it's still such an enjoyable movie before that, and the turn into the surreal is such a weird, refreshing breath of fresh air in a genre that's been defined by "humans are their own worst enemy" and "horror movie villains are unknowable and they always win because they're horror movie villains". Midsommar isn't quite as... personal, maybe? Something about it doesn't reach Hereditary's level of quality. But it's a very pretty movie, and it's enjoyable to a point. I just don't think it meets Hereditary's level of quality

Not that I recall, but it's been awhile since I've seen it. It's dark but not "horror" like Hereditary. I have a hard time describing it without spoilers, and I think it'll be better to go in fairly blind.

I loved Midsommar. Hated Hereditary, it was so cheesy. Agree that the ending was just stupid and unintentionally funny.

Hereditary was the one of the best horror movies I viewed in a long time. I loved the fact it wasnt depending on jump scares to give you goosebumps but the tone and atmosphere gives you chills. Theres times you think someone is there due to camera work and it was so disturbing. Movie stuck with me for a while
