I agree to a certain point, but some states have done much better. I fault the federal government for lack of oversight. Allowing the states to handle it created a situation where some places will recover more quickly and others will cause the pandemic to last for several more months. Had those people been ordered by the federal government to close non essential business and take measures to keep people inside, then we would all be recovering on the same pace.

the people in states with slow recovery are going to flock to places that seem normal again, buying everything and clogging up the streets and stores. Not to mention that they will he further exposing us after we made the sacrifice to stay in.

No they aren't. In a pandemic, the CDC, FEMA and the federal government can and should run the show.
They shouldn't "leave it up to the states" as they've done so far in the US.

Governors bicker and beg over limited federal attention / resources

It's idiotic.

The federal government did about as well as it could, given that "OMG panic!" is not justification for stomping on civil liberty, and that any attempts to deny international arrivals were instantly decreed "racism" somehow.

You want to "fix" this, then we need to go back in time to the 90s, when Clinton and Gingrich essentially told manufacturing industries to move every-damn-thing to China. That's why we have no N-95 masks or respirators right now.

There are a lot of rural regions of the US that are practically untouched by the pandemic and still think it's a hoax or overblown. You've got to remember that a lot of these are just simple farmers and factory workers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the Midwest. You know... morons.

no, we don't have those because we didn't buy them 2-3 months ago when the existing pandemic response guidelines the previous administration wrote called for us to buy them.

because the guidelines called for purchasing them at the outset of a pandemic, 2-3 months before it hits our shores

no, the tp-hoarding started in late feb-early march

the guidelines, which you should read before commenting on them, are designed around filling the stockpile in advance of the demand spike, when it's not clear the pandemic poses a direct threat, so that it can then be used to bail out individual states who are less prepared/hit harder than they can prepare for

Are you suggesting allocating some intelligence resources into intercepting pandemics?

No. Just no.

Local governments were instructing people to avoid contact and suggested that people stay home before the federal government decided to even make a statement.

The federal government spends over 125% of what it takes in, and the NSC pandemic unit instituted after the ebola outbreak was not a sacred cow at the time.
That's what happened. It's a sacred cow now.

I guess Trump should have immediately gave orders for the military to set up check stations at every corner and in front of businesses and other establishments.

It's like how people blamed Bush for Katrina when the local government fucked up.

I mean I don't think that governors and mayors have to wait for federal approval in some cases?

They kinda do, because most states are "crippled" by radical concepts like fiscal responsibility and balanced budgets.
The federal government is perfectly free to dogpile debt and invent money, at least until the various creditors collectively tell it to fuck off and hyperinflation quickly happens.

here's the thing.

the guidelines I'm describing didn't require any special pandemic units.

they just required the federal government to make some purchases in reaction to global events.

also, any talk of 'they couldnt afford it' earns a 'get the fuck outta here' when they just enacted a massive tax cut during an economic boom cycle that would have otherwise covered much of the deficit

they were in no way being deficit conscious

right, but it still wouldn't have prevented them from reading the memo in january, agreeing that it should be followed, and directing FEMA to purchase a bunch of PPE.
