Started throwing up this morning.

I thought he didn't need to go to the vet quite yet because he just started throwing up, but within an hour girlfriend took him to the vet because we had some crumbs and raisins from cake on a plate out overnight (may have at 1-2 partial raisins) and she had some packaging peanuts in a box.

Told girlfriend before she went to the vet he didn't have any cake but possibly a couple partial raisins. Girlfriend told vet he may have had a good amount cake. Vet did a full suite of tests and x-rays on him. Vet decided he had too much cake from story but all tests good. Cat didn't actually have any cake, girlfriend didn't mention him not having any cake upon pickup.

Somehow my cat got their claw into another years ago, clawed cat was so fluffy we didn't notice an abscess had formed until it burst.

Took him to the vet, vet tried to turn a $300 procedure into a $900 with tons of unrelated tests.

I was missing when full on XRay work, blood work, and medicine cost $126. Same place, and in this case we took the cat at night. (Mom's cat, got out into the road and hit by a car. Somehow was mostly fine.)

I get they're different circumstances, but hot dang.

One of my goats was pregnant and started to give birth a few days ago but it was going badly and I had to find a large animal vet on Sunday. The baby's head apparently wouldn't engage and the vet couldn't just pull it out so he had to do a Cesarean. The kid unfortunately didn't make it but the mother survived. Ended up costing over $400.

We thought she was going to have twins (or more) because she was so wide but it was just a single enormous kid.

I racked up a $700 bill a few weeks back because my male cat was acting like he had a urinary blockage. I saved a couple hundred by turning down the bloodwork they wanted to do, but the urinalysis, x-ray, and assortment of drugs he got ended up being rather expensive. This was also the emergency vet, of course, so that inflated prices quite a bit. And then he still wasn't any better the next morning so we took him back for a follow-up appointment. As it turns out, he just had a UTI along with possibly some idiopathic cystitis (we'd had a flood in the apartment about a month prior and had an industrial dehumidifer and some big fans set up for ~4 weeks, keeping him locked in one room for most of that, so he was a bit stressed out), but he also had evidence of crystals in his urine that could have ended up with a blockage, so we've changed his food to manage that.

Fortunately, his insurance paid back ~$565 of that, which is really handy.

I need to look into insurance. I love my cat, I wouldnt get another to replace him because his personality is so unique. Still recovering from sedation in the photo, couldnt keep his mouth shut.

Honestly, for a reasonably-healthy cat, insurance may not actually be worthwhile. We're paying $35/month, and in the almost-two years we've had this cat, we've had ~$800 in payouts from his policy. Had we not been paying for it, we'd be breaking about even right now, and long-term, we'll probably be coming out in the red. That said, regular expenses are easier to stomach and budget around than big surprises, which is the whole point of insurance. He also does need dental work whenever we can get the money together for it, and getting that paid for will put us ahead of the premiums for a while.

We didn't even try getting insurance for our other cat, though. We adopted her at 15 with no vet records (owner died and a fostering agency put us directly in touch with his housemate) and fairly quickly discovered severe hyperthyroidism and some mild kidney disease. I don't even know if we could get insurance for her, let alone at a rate that would actually benefit us.

You found it in the wild and caught it after beating the shit out of it with your other pets?
