I've been looking to buy a switch for my mom so we can play animal crossing in quarantine (she's in illinois while I'm in washington and my plans to visit her were canceled by the virus)

Looks like switches aren't really in short supply, but scalpers are basically doing as scalpers do, and it's hard to find any not marked up to 400+

Has anyone else solved this? Is there like some wait list that some stores have? Is there a stealthy way of asking board 8 if they'll sell a used switch to me? Guys you gotta help me out

I don't know if this will be much help to you, but I've seen some being sold on websites like Craigslist and Letgo that weren't marked up. You could try searching your area for such.

Would your mom prefer a regular Switch or a Switch Lite? The former will be much harder to get for MSRP or less than the latter.

Since you're in Washington, I assume you have Fred Meyer near you? I would check your local Fred Meyer(s) first if you haven't already. People often forget that they carry video games, but their Nintendo inventory is often great. What I'd give to have that chain in my area...!

You can also use Brickseek to check your local Wal-Mart and Target locations for different Switch SKUs. They may receive a Hail Mary restock or something; it's worth checking on periodically. Generally speaking, it looks like the gray and turquoise Switch Lites are the easiest Switches to find at MSRP right now.

I saw a pallet on a shelf at my Costco, if thats an option for you. You might get one at yours, if its the same at all of the stores.

Switch Lites are in stock on Best Buy's website right now. No guarantee for how long.
