Apparently most people can't tell it apart. The cracker is just filling, the flavor comes from cream of tartar. In fact, this article says all you need to get an apple flavor is sugar, water, and cream of tartar.

Huh, that's so weird... I didn't know cream of tartar had a fruity taste, I've only used it in very small quantities to stabilize meringues

Cream of tartar is a crystallized acidic compound that is precipitated from wine, and used to be found in the bottoms of wine barrels
Its acidity also makes it a mix-in ingredient in baking powder which is basically baking soda with cream of tartar mixed in as an acid, so the the entire mixture foams the minute it hits liquid.

This blew my mind. Learned some new stuff from a stupid topic about making apple pie with freaking ritz crackers. Now I'm setting up to make this shit for tomorrow. I'll have to use fakeo crust instead of making my own however.

Can confirm filling tastes pretty similar. It doesn't seem so bad. We'll see how it works out as a whole when it's done in about 40 minutes. I'll probably be making a new topic with a review on this thing.

While I added the crackers and crushed them in the boiling mixture it eerily looked like apple pie slices interestingly. Really the coloring came from t he cinnamon primarily. Lemon juice is used as the acidic thickener. This is gonna be interesting.

This is store brand crust, it already tastes horrible. If I was making it with my own homemade crust I totally would.
