so their excuse for not telling us earlier was because they didnt want us to go and buy all of the masks, so instead dead bodies start piling up in hospitals and the important people run out of them regardless?

Wearing a mask is not to protect yourself, you're trying to protect others if you're infected and don't know it. It doesn't need to be some fancy ultra-HEPA filteration mask, just something to reduce the dispersion of airborne particles.

only the asian countries cause this is what they're used to.

But no European country has been recommending it explicitly because the evidence is currently not clear cut.

The WHO is changing its stance on that though. But America is in the same boat as most countries when it comes to masks.

I've heard people were getting assaulted for wearing masks in the US, because people were afraid someone wearing a mask meant they were infected, and they were putting people in danger by going out. I...don't remember where I heard it, but it sounds dumb enough to be real, doesn't it?

Oh shit that says the opposite of what FrozenBananas believes. WHO itself still doesn't recommend face masks for the healthy and a lot of countries are still following those guidelines. How have they been months ahead of the US if they aren't ahead at all

If everyone wore a mask it's likely 6 feet would be enough in most cases, as it'll prevent the spread as easily.

It doesn't stop the virus from getting through mind you, but it does slow down the movement of your breath and
prevents it from moving as far away from your body. It does that for everyone with a mask in fact, which means
if you combine a mask with social distancing you ARE less like to get the virus or spread it if you do.

There are 2 primary reasons home made masks are less effective.

1 is that the virus is too small and can pass through whatever cloth etc you use in the mask. There isn't too much you can do for that, although I believe you can look up ways to make it a bit more effective online.

The second reason you can do somethign about, and that is that the home made masks do not completely cover your mouth/nose from the side (air etc can flow in from the sides). This you can do something about by extending the mask (like using a scarf) and ensuring it either fully surrounds your head (again tying a scarf behind your head with the mask portion over your face/nose) and ensure it's sealed against your skin above your nose.

Still won't prevent it 100%, because again,the virus is too small, but it will help even more if you are moving fairly quickly through any areas where someone has been recently, and you stay 6 feet or more way from them.

Most importantly if EVERYONE wore something like that, the areas of possible infection would be far smaller.
just take the whole thing and wash it when you get home, and have it ready for the next time.

Pillow cases are generally good to use for face masks (the parts that covers your mouth/nose). You could look up
trying to make them anti-bacterial as well (but ensure whatever you use is safe online first). I would also say that breathing through your nose can't hurt either, it has it's own filtration system, and generally doesn't suck air in
from as far away (also try and prevent speaking/talking etc while out.

If you follow all that, cover up your body as much as possible, and of course wash your hands when you get back home (even if you covered them it can't hurt), you at least will reduce the chance of getting infected and greatly
reduce the chance of infecting others if you already are.
