I wish Piers were funnier. He's probably the weakest link in the recurring castmembers.

I think season 5 of red dwarf was probably the best, particularly liked the inquisitor episode for the philosophy as much as the comedy. With reboots decades later it's often a case of be careful what you wish for but the new seasons were really good actually.

Man, it feels like forever since I watched Red Dwarf. Although some of the later seasons didn't stack up with the best -- usually, when the characters were younger -- the later seasons were pretty good, all things considered.

Bit much to call him a fresh-faced nobody, he'd already done two series of Blackadder and was in the middle of his Bit of Fry and Laurie run

fun fact: while looking up other british sitcoms, having mentioned Blackadder, I notice that One Foot in the Grave was remade in the US as Cosby. Somehow I doubt the faint but irrepressibly dark and hopeless tone was kept...

Not a Rik Mayall one, but if you've never had it on your list then One Foot in the Grave is a good shout. It gets almost kafka-esque at points, but is still great. came 6th when they did a poll of best UK sitcoms.

I remembered it being highly respected, so it should be pretty easy to find. Maybe I'll watch that one next, just for a change of pace.

Should also watch these The Thick of It specials I downloaded and didn't get around to. I also wish someone would've told me the Huge Abbot guy was a pedophile IRL before I gave him praise. Was wondering why he was unceremoniously off-screened between seasons.

Rik Mayall stars in a film called Drop Dead Fred about a girl who has become conventional as an adult and Rik returns to her as her childhood imaginary (destructive) friend. It was panned by the critics at the time but is a bit of a cult classic now.

There's also the Comic Strip Presents - a series of spoof films made for tv. He wasn't in all of those though.

Yeah, that's gotta be one of the crappiest excuses in the history of mankind.

Alan tricking Piers into munching cocaine is pretty funny. "It's a new flavor of sherbet!"

Woman: I need my ludes!
Alan: I can be really lewd! I can be disgusting!
Woman: No, my quaaludes! It makes sex last forever!
Alan: --Where are they!? Give me some!!!

And look, it's the Red Dwarf captain. After he retired, he went to Hollywood!

Another two movies only star.
Roy Hollis appeared in Diamonds Are Forever as a Las Vegas Sheriff and Live and Let Die as a State Trooper.

You think of the CIA guy, Felix Leiter?
He was played by 8 actors.

Anyway, should try watching a new ep today. Haven't been in a TV mood much this week.

About time you did! Brilliant, very explicit and rude UK comedy written by Phoebe Waller Bridge based on her stage play. Only 2 seasons and it ended. (The first episode can be a bit off-putting but it picks up after that.) Check it out. Also The Detectorists - written by Mackenzie Crook. Gentle pastoral comedy about two losers. (Might have seen him in Pirates of the Caribbean.)
