Almost through season five. I heard someone say in the last topic that the last couple seasons suck (?), but I'mma soldier on. I also wish they'd bring back Holly, a bundle of hilarity, instead of FemHolly, a bundle of anti-hilarity...but it'd be a sausagefest otherwise, I suppose.

The despair squid episode was pretty good, from "Dwayne Dibley" having buck teeth, to Rimmer wearing "eau de yak urine," to the VR guy making fun of everyone for playing the Red Dwarf game incorrectly, to everyone trying to commit suicide with a gun's only bullet.

Okay, onto season six.

That part was pretty good. I don't think we've had many Holly-centric episodes since the M/F switch, though, so the ol' computer has felt like a third wheel in a lot of situations lately. Maybe that'll change coming up.

The DVDs had the BTS footage of the shows being made, outtakes and all that. One of the snippets was (I think) the gag about Lister putting on the shapeshifting under wear, Kryten trying to help him, and Rimmer commenting about him boning anything. The audienced laughed for about 10 minutes at that, the actors just had to wait for them to stop.

Such a great show

There's also two episodes that were written and storyboarded but never filmed:

They got Chris Barrie to read it out while doing voices for everyone:

Body Snatcher: Season 1. Not made because they used the extra week to reshoot 2/3rds of the pilot.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YesvsRnF4As

Identity Within: Season 7. Not made because they massively overspent on the JFK episode and had no budget left. made Duct Soup as a bottleneck episode instead:

Fun fact about that

They actually had to edit it down because the audience wouldn't stop laughing.

"Well I cant say I'm totally shocked, youd bonk anything wouldn't you Lister?" Was supposed to be the punchline but audience laughed so hard for about 30 seconds that Barrie had to just stand there until he was half shouting his lines.

Craig Charles was flopping around on the floor for ages just waiting for the crowd to stop laughing

It won an Emmy. Something very few British shows have done, let alone low budget sci-fi

Remember this was filmed in England (Kent actually which is hilarious) which I think is why people respect it so much. It's one thing to say "Let's do cowboy episode" when you live in Texas and have 7 figure budgets, it's another when you live in Manchester England and are pulling props from your pockets.

Lister: Dallas? Wasn't the place where that American king got assassinated?
Rimmer: JFK.
Lister: No, it was John something, not Jeff K.
Rimmer: J - F - K! Not "Jeff K.," ya gimboid. Like the airport! I did a paper on him in school.
Lister: I wonder why anyone would want to name their kid after an airport.

Cat: This chicken's good!

Fun fact about that scene/episode

When they made it and sent season 7 to the American censors they said "You might want to take a closer look at this JFK episode because we don't want to accidentally say anything culturally offensive to Americans."

And they got a response from the FFC or whoever it was in charge at the time saying "Yeah we can't air one scene."

And they were shocked that it turned out to be that one you quoted.

Murdering the Oswold and the President is fine, as is turning the assassination attempt into a farce but when it aired in the US they cut that scene out because "Cannibalism is just too offensive for the American people" lol

I think it's the most expensive one they shot out of the first 8 seasons so you're going to make the creators cry lol

I don't think cannibalism as a joke bothers people in the UK. I mean the IT Crowd did a whole episode about it that was literally making fun of a real case and no one cared.

I think Emohawk is the weakest episode. It's almost a clipshow. "Remember these funny gags, here they are again!"

Gotta disagree.

No Rob Grant
No Live Audience
Duct Soup
Part Time Rimmer

Not counting Back to Earth and beyond. Season 7 is the weakest by far IMO. It's not "awful" or anything but it all lost a step and everyone seems to lack energy and passion
