Duct Soup

IMO this is the best episode of Series 7, lots of great character building

I just recall being on pins and needles after the S6 cliffhanger and being all "wtf is this crap" once I saw 'Tikka To Ride'
Then there's also the implication that the USA would have gone to shit had Kennedy not been assassinated, and that he was better off dead.
Like wtf is up with that? I'll admit it's a powerful ending but again it's not funny at all.

Gonna agree to disagree.

No real jokes, just a whole lot of nothing happening. They had no money left and you could tell.

It's no The Fly

Interested in TC's take when he gets to it.

Not to mention 'Duct Soup' has the great "Kochanski vs the Water Pipes" scene that really removed any doubts I had about her character

Ace: Skipper, you can't judge a book by its cover.
Lister: And you can't confuse Rimmer with a book. For starters, a book's got a spine.

This ep had some pretty good lines, including "Stoke me a clipper -- I'll be back for Christmas. Or whatever".

I've been enjoying the Starbug dynamic the last season or two, without the myriad conveniences of Red Dwarf or FemHolly's deadpanning. Hopefully they won't put the pursuit on the back burner for too long, though.

I see that Christine is swapping in now that Rimmer's out. I already knew it would happen, since I saw the Wikipedia page before, but it still has potential, despite how contrived it feels.

I always found it odd that they couldn't find Kochanski's holo data or something in earlier seasons. Rimmer said he hid it somewhere so no replacement holograms could be made, but you'd think there'd be a record of it somewhere. I guess it's easy to forget just how big that mining ship is. One of the jokes early on was how Rimmer was vacationing by trekking through 90+ decks and taking pictures of valves and stuff, lmao.

Holly would have had records, but since Rimmer was the ranking officer, he wasn't allowed to say.

Lister: Now is not a good time to tell me how great your boyfriend is, okay?
Kochanski: He wasn't my boyfriend...not really.
Lister: What?
Kochanski: No, we're just good friends.
Lister: But you said--
Kochanski: I just didn't want to look like some sad loser when we first met...so I asked him to play along.
Lister: You weren't going out with him?
Kochanski: He wasn't my type.
Lister: But he was well dressed, neat, sophisticated, sensitive...you're so damn picky! Why wasn't he your type?
Kochanski: He was gay.
Lister: You see! Picky!

Duct Soup wasn't too shabby. I do agree that some of the crew dynamics in this season seem a bit forced, though, and not just because of the change a few eps ago. Cat's dialogue has been a bit weak, too, although the "So how'd you get claustrophobia? Were you born with it or are you just a bit sissy?" was pretty good.

Cat got majorly shafted in season 7 because his episode wasn't made due to JFK episode overspending

It's worth checking out the read through they did of the script

Kryten: You keep secrets from me.
Lister: Like what?
Kryten: What about your nickname when you were at school?
Lister: What nickname?
Kryten: I know what it was.
Lister: I don't think so. No one knows that.
Kryten: I'm afraid that's just not true, fat boy.

Man, Kryt's been killing it this season and is definitely the MVP. From his high-pitched crying voice, to his anger and spitefulness that's becoming of a small child, to sabotaging Pride & Prejudice Land with an amphibious tank (one of the funniest scenes in the series so far)... He deserves an award.

Lister: Need a hand, Kryts?
Kryten: He ain't heavy, sir -- he's my brother.

Shame. His jokes have been a little off this season, but maybe he'll redeem himself a bit more in the next two eps. It's weird, but Rimmer was such a comedic punching bag, that when he's not around as much, there's no one to really fill that hole.

Yesss, Season 8 is starting off great. Considering how sudden some of these awesome changes are, it feels like this will all be reversed/undone/whatever in the future -- which would suck -- but I'll see how it goes. Did Kochanski get a new actress between seasons? She seems different... ...maybe it's the hair.

PS: Cat's pulse and heartbeat having some type of sweet polyrhythm going was great, lmao.

Yeah, the captain's been great.

I've noticed this season's had more profanity in it, too. I don't mind, really, but calling people bitches and stuff really stands out against the family-friendly "smeg this" and "smeg that". I wonder if the show was granted more license (switching to a different channel, for instance) or something.

yeah, there's also a marked increase in scatological humor
not that it's necessarily a bad thing. the show always had a focus on certain types of gross-out humor (the curry monster, the GELFs, the Epideme-controlled corpse, etc) but poop jokes are kinda lowbrow

Hollister really saves it with his reaction (or lack of one)
