It's really more known for it's artistic style and narrative theme.

As a game it's nothing that special really.

Once you get more combat options it gets to be a lot of fun. Just give it a little bit more time.

What dont you like about it?

I think most of the love for it is towards its environment, atmosphere, and narrative. Similar to something like System Shock/2 or Prey (2017).

It picks up somewhere in Neptune's Bounty or Arcadia

You didnt think the game picked up right form the beginning? I was hooked. I remember replaying the demo over and over. What a beautiful and fun game

The best part is like the first 2 hours when you're still being introduced to the cool environment. After you get over that, it's the same 3 enemy designs who progressively become bullet sponges for the rest of the game. It's massively overrated.

As others have said, the atmosphere and world are the central attractions, though I thought the gameplay was at least adequate. Between plasmids, gunplay, a melee build, and hacks, you had multiple options for tackling any scenario. I think Fort Frolic is the most popular area (that's midway through), but if you're not enjoying it by the end of the first main area (Medical Pavilion), you probably won't.

I'm still waiting to see if he actually cares about the opinions here, or if he just came to spark something >_>. So far, it's very low effort on his end. Hopefully, he didn't come back because he seen the light.

I prefer BioShock 1 (atmosphere) while one of my friends prefers BioShock 2 (two-handed) and another friend prefers BioShock Infinite (faster pace).

Get the right upgrades for your character and you're bound to enjoy at least one of the BioShock games.

I enjoyed it right away too but I think once you start getting more plasmids and weapons it probably passes a general enjoyment threshhold I guess.

It's kiind of an acquired taste and probably won't please people that are used to CoD and such. The 2nd game has much better combat.

I agree with both points, but it is a great game. B1 rewards things like hacking and redirection. If you try to pass an area weapons lit, enemies will gank you.

Bioshock and Biochosk Infinite both have this problem where experimentation isn't rewarded (in fact, weapon switching is actively punished in Infinite). If you ignore the disincentives though, you can do some really fun combos with plasmids / vigors. The combat doesn't have to be that boring if you put some effort and imagination into it... but the games do make the player work for it, which is totally fair to criticize imo.

If there are any youtubers you watch, I suggest watching a let's play of it. Checked one out a few years ago to enjoy the atmosphere and story. When I finally played the games myself a few months ago, it didn't suck me in the same way.

I never could get into Bioshock either. It has a lot of what I should like, but it just didn't hook me.
