You responded to me saying that 400 dollars a week was ample money. You don't even know what you're typing now.

$400 is more than enough to rent out a fully furnished penthouse in any city and still have more than enough leftover to buy avocado toast every morning

Maybe in some places but I doubt that for much of the US.

While I can understand most of the points in this topic, I'm unsure if this is the best thing to do for every citizen.

I live in one of the cheapest cost of living states. So the extra unemployment benefits are going to be too much for a lot of people here imo.
A lot of companies have shutdown and laid people off, which is awful, but at the same time, a lot of those people are guaranteed to get their jobs back after the shutdown is over. Minimum wage is only $10 in my state right now, and the median household income is less than $50,000. It's just weird to me that a lot of "essential" workers, who have to risk their own health and their families health, will have less income than others who are unemployed now. Even though they were in similar or lesser paid positions before they were unemployed.

I mean this is great for higher cost of living states and states with average higher wages, but a lot of unemployed people in my state are about to have a ton of extra benefits and money that they don't necessarily need...

Jen stop being a horrible person. All youre doing is putting words in my mouth and its not in the least bit entertaining. You know I said that people can get into a place with roommates and drastically reduce their individual costs for rent. I also never said that anybody should live in a crime ridden area, I said they could, which was literally the answer to the question you asked me.

Troll harder Jen. Troll harder.

Idk one of us is a horrible person but it def isn't me.

I don't know why the topic ended up being about California specifically.

But well before this crisis, and it will remain true long after it....
It has been pretty obvious that the coastal CA cities' housing prices are wildly unsustainable, and trying to design a social safety net or minimum wage around what it costs to live in those places is just not even remotely feasible.
CA government should be...and should have been....implementing drastic measures to try and curb the insane real estate costs. The most obvious would be banning or HEAVILY taxing property ownership by international buyers, since Chinese using the Pacific coastal cities as a way to store their money is a significant contributor to the rising prices.
Florida I know has a homestead law where the costs go up massively for anything beyond your home of residence. Add that in, too!
Mandate that some housing units cannot be rented out and must be residences for the owners.
Fund more apartments and affordable housing.

Just...fucking shoot a bazooka of stuff at the problem. Cause it is a major problem, that will eventually cripple the state and ravage those cities. Housing should be prioritizing for people to live in. Not as an investment.

It's $600 per week in addition to the normal UI amounts,

increasing the maximum unemployment benefit by $600.

These sound like two very different things. The way that's worded, I don't think anyone making less than that will be getting that much.

The plan may have changed since I posted the topic.

Originally it was full state amount + $600.
Then I saw something about half the state amount + $600 (not sure if that was credible, and it honestly makes no sense to do it that way)

and apparently more stuff happened before it finally passed

I saw that mentioned somewhere too but according to the New York Times its still the full amount, and Im slightly jealous of New Jerseys over $700 benefit amount now because of it.

The idea is this helps the economy by putting money back in to it. If my wife and I both get laid off money is gonna be VERY tight. Our 1 BR apartment is $1,400/month and that's considered "cheap" for San Diego. We'd basically have to really tighten our belts for awhile until things get back to normal. The problem with that, is that means even less money is going into the economy, so more people are getting laid off, businesses going under, etc. Part of why the Great Depression was so bad was because the Hoover administration's response was to initially do nothing, and just tell people to tighten their belts up more which managed to collapse the economy even more.

It's putting money into specific lucky pockets and not others'. If someone was getting by with their wages before, they don't need an unemployment check that exceeds those wages. Getting unemployment is fine. Suddenly getting $25/hr from unemployment when you were getting $15/hr before and others in essential jobs are still working and making that $15/hr...is not fine.

And again...I get it, CA is stupid expensive. CA is free to pump in some extra money to its unemployment and other services to help people afford the crazy cost of living. Though $1400 is way less than I thought it'd be there...that's really not far off the rents I've had...

Finally...you could give everyone a million dollars. They're still not gonna go to a sit in restaurant or movie theater. No amount of hand outs is going to "stimulate the economy" by getting people to go to businesses that can't stay open anyway.

Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner here!

People who are essential are literally what is keeping those who are inessential fed, supplied, and entertained and yet they are coming out of this worse off than those who are sitting back and doing literally nothing to help get us all through this so called crisis.
