So my States going on lock down tomorrow and I decide maybe I should go to GameStop and get the $30 in credit I have towards Final Fantasy 7 change to a steam gift card or something

Show up at the store and there's a sign on the door, says to call for service. No answer. Call 4 times can clearly see someone is inside refusing to answer. Three more people show up behind me. We start knocking and say we see him and ask if they're closed or not.

Finally guy opens door says they're open but nobody can come in. (Duh we read the sign that's why were calling like it says)

I tell him I want to put my pre order credit towards a steam gift card. Says he cant do it without corporate approval but assures me they will get the game in "eventually". I tell him I just want the card. He argues with me about it for five more minutes before calling corporate who deny it and assure me I wont lose the credit and even if I cant get the game in time and they sell it the credit will remain on my account. I ask if the credit remains on my account what's the difference if they give it to me now on a card? Well the orders are already in so my copy cant be cancelled. But you just said you may sell that copy so what's it matter if it's on the way?

Told me to give the phone to the guy so they could authorize it, but after the guy hung up he told me they said that I could either buy something in store now with it or cancel it and lose the credit entirely. Lol wut?

At this point I said fuck it and left. I'm 100% certain I'm not getting this game and I'm out 30 bucks in credit cause corporate is acting like they dont plan to exist in the next few weeks.

There would be no reason to buy from them anymore because Amazon will always have better deals than them. The only reason they've survived this long is because they're the only big physical game store chain. A lot of people like being able to go to an actual building to shop for their games.

Yes but then it is just smarter to buy from Ebay. Ordering used games from Amazon or GameStop is a total crapshoot in terms of what you'll get from it.

Edit: And even buy it now prices on Ebay are usually at least on par with anything used on Amazon or GameStop. The one advantage GameStop had was being able to see it in person.

Im shocked they havent become an online only retailer with the very rare storefront. There would be so much less overhead, and they can still hawk their shitty collectibles.

If they could figure out a way to do trade ins efficiently for a good price, they would have it made.

Gamestop was good as a place that I can walk in and buy it instantly without waiting for shipping... but of course brick and mortar stores in general are not going to be surviving this pandemic especially when Gamestop was already on a downward slope.

I can't remember the last thing I even bought at GameStop. 15+ years ago, yeah, they were the place to go for any of your gaming needs. But with the rise of digital and Amazon's deals, I'm surprised GameStop has lasted this long.

Hell, even places like Walmart, have started selling games at -$10 off their retail price. Not sure if you've noticed, but over the last 6 months or so, Walmart has been pricing brand new $60 games at $50, $50 games at $40, etc.

With the convenience of Amazon, and the slashed prices off of games at Walmart, I don't know why anyone would continue going through GameStop.

GameStop has always seemed determined to fail. Truly awful customer service at every single one I've ever been to. Seriously, never dealt with a single decent employee there.

If gamestop ended up a online-only retailer, honestly I probably would still buy from them....amazon has been awful about cancelling niche game pre-orders without warning close to release for the past two years or so now (its almost always "lol we did not get enough shipment, so here is a gift card to fuck off" type of situation). Recently, people who pre-ordered the megaman zero legacy collection from them had this problem, and for the dudes that did somehow still get their pre-order copy, amazon never bothered to send them their pre-order bonus code, =/

I personally wouldn't trust amazon with my niche game pre-orders.
